Matt Damon Leads Betting Odds for Best Actor at the 2027 Oscars for ‘The Odyssey’

As awards season approaches, prediction markets have become a popular way for traders to place real money on their forecasts, even before nominations are revealed. This trend has made platforms like Kalshi a valuable early indicator of how Hollywood insiders and film enthusiasts perceive the competition, well in advance of the Academy Awards ceremony.

Currently, the focus is on the 2027 Best Actor race, where one performance stands out. According to Kalshi’s live trading data, Matt Damon is the clear frontrunner for Best Actor for his role in Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ with a trading probability of 31%. This positions him significantly ahead of Timothée Chalamet, who has 4% odds for his performance in ‘Dune: Part Three.’

Tom Cruise is in second place in the current betting market with 27%, making the competition tighter than the odds might suggest. His chances are linked to his role in ‘Digger,’ a dark comedy directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, whose previous films ‘Birdman’ and ‘The Revenant’ have earned him significant Oscar recognition.

Damon’s strong position in the market seems closely connected to the awards potential of ‘The Odyssey.’ The Cinema Group reports that the film is already being considered a strong contender for Best Picture, which often enhances the prospects of the lead actor, as frontrunners for Best Picture typically help their stars advance in major acting categories.

The same analysis indicated that the Best Actor race is still evolving, with a mix of established names and newcomers. The report described the current landscape as featuring “three near-locks and a genuine scrum for the last two seats.” It noted that both ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Digger’ had not yet reached wide audiences, suggesting that the odds could change significantly once more viewers experience these performances.

In addition to Damon, Cruise, and Chalamet, the nomination market includes other contenders. According to Yahoo’s coverage of a separate Kalshi nomination bet, John Malkovich and Cruise have been trading places as frontrunners for a nomination, while other names in contention include Sebastian Stan for ‘Fjord,’ Jaafar Jackson for ‘Michael,’ and Ryan Gosling for ‘Project Hail Mary.’

The report also highlighted the unpredictable nature of these awards races, recalling the 2026 ceremony where Timothée Chalamet was the early frontrunner for ‘Marty Supreme’ before Michael B. Jordan’s late performance in ‘Sinners’ took the award, illustrating that early leaders can falter as the full slate of contenders is revealed.

For both Damon and Cruise, winning this category would be particularly meaningful, as neither has secured a competitive acting Oscar despite their extensive careers. The eventual winner would claim a long-awaited first Oscar for their impressive body of work.

With the 99th Academy Awards set for March 14, 2027, there is ample time for the odds to fluctuate as more contenders hit theaters and audiences respond.
