Marvel Studios has honed the art of the comeback tour, and the anticipation surrounding ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ feels particularly unique. Seven years after the emotional conclusion of the Infinity Saga, Marvel is banking on nostalgia to drive impressive box office numbers.

Tickets for the rerelease officially went on sale on Tuesday, August 25, allowing fans to secure their seats ahead of the film’s return on September 25. This rollout is part of a larger strategy to connect ‘Endgame’ with the upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to premiere in December.

The demand for tickets was evident almost immediately. Early reports indicate that ‘Endgame Encore’ achieved the largest pre-sales start ever recorded for a theatrical rerelease within just two hours of tickets becoming available, placing it alongside some of the strongest advance ticket launches in recent history.

This kind of performance isn’t surprising, considering what ‘Endgame’ signifies in box office history. The original release in 2019 grossed $2.799 billion worldwide, briefly making it the highest-grossing film before ‘Avatar’ reclaimed the title during a pandemic-era rerelease.

This time, Marvel is not merely re-showing the original cut. ‘Endgame Encore’ is set to run 185 minutes, which is four minutes longer than the theatrical version, featuring new footage that ties directly into the ‘Doomsday’ storyline, along with a custom introduction and a special end tag.

Marvel has kept the details of this new material under wraps, and the trailer released so far does not reveal any specifics. Reports suggest that the added footage is closer to five minutes and is intended to set up plot threads leading into ‘Doomsday,’ although the studio has not confirmed what audiences can expect to see.

Additionally, there’s a notable format aspect for those planning to visit the theater. The new ‘Doomsday’-related content will be available at every screening, but those who opt for IMAX or Disney’s newly introduced Infinity Vision-certified theaters will receive an exclusive sneak peek not shown elsewhere.

Infinity Vision itself is Disney’s solution to a scheduling conflict, as IMAX screens are exclusively booked for Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Three,’ which shares the same December 18 release window as ‘Doomsday.’ This strategy allows Marvel to provide a premium large-format experience for its next major release.

Rolling out that certification now, linked to a proven crowd-pleaser like ‘Endgame,’ gives Disney a low-risk opportunity to build recognition for the format ahead of ‘Doomsday.’ This strategy appears to be effective, as evidenced by the rapid ticket sales.

The merchandising efforts have also matched the ticket demand. New posters have been released for both 4DX and Infinity Vision screenings, along with collectible popcorn buckets shaped like Iron Man’s helmet and the Nano Gauntlet from the film’s climactic battle.

Whether this record-setting presale pace continues through September 25 remains to be seen, but the early figures indicate that Marvel has successfully tapped into the nostalgia that made ‘Endgame’ a cultural phenomenon back in 2019. For a franchise preparing for one of its biggest releases yet, this is a promising start for the studio.

‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ is set to return to theaters on September 25, with ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ following on December 18.
