Almost a year has gone by since ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 concluded with an emotionally charged finale in the DC Universe’s television lineup. Fans have been eagerly awaiting any news regarding the show’s future, especially with the unresolved cliffhangers still looming large.

The speculation began following the Season 2 finale, “Full Nelson,” which left Chris Smith, portrayed by John Cena, in a precarious situation. Instead of a victorious farewell, the episode concluded with Peacemaker imprisoned on a distant planet known as Salvation, designed to contain metahumans considered too dangerous for Earth, after Rick Flag Sr. banished him there for killing his son.

As the one-year mark of that finale approaches this October, James Gunn has finally addressed the show’s future. When asked on Threads about the possibility of ‘Peacemaker’ Season 3, Gunn replied with a single confused-face emoji, prompting fans to speculate on the meaning behind this ambiguous response.

This kind of vague response aligns with Gunn’s previous comments regarding renewal plans. He has indicated that a third season isn’t officially in development but has not entirely ruled it out, emphasizing that Peacemaker remains a significant character within the broader DC Universe, even if his next appearance doesn’t follow the traditional Season 3 format.

In addition to Chris’s imprisonment, the finale left several other plot threads that could easily lead to a continuation. Adrian, played by Freddie Stroma, utilized the show’s ill-gotten gains to establish Checkmate, a new counter-intelligence organization featuring familiar 11th Street Kids like Harcourt, Economos, Adebayo, Fleury, Judomaster, and Bordeaux, all seemingly gearing up to rescue their imprisoned friend.

Meanwhile, Flag and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor seem to be transforming Salvation into a full-scale prison for metahumans, a concept reminiscent of the 2007 DC Comics storyline “Salvation Run,” which saw villains like Luthor, the Joker, and various Flash rogues exiled to a similar off-world prison. This comic book connection suggests that the idea has enough depth to support a larger DCU storyline, whether or not it manifests as another season of ‘Peacemaker.’

Given how directly Season 2 tied into Gunn’s broader Superman-launched DCU plans, any continuation of these unresolved plot threads would likely need to fit into the larger release schedule rather than existing independently. Whether this means an actual third season, a Checkmate-focused spinoff, or Chris Smith’s storyline continuing in other DCU projects remains uncertain.

For now, Gunn’s single emoji serves as the closest thing fans have to an official update, leaving many questions about the show’s future unanswered.
