The box office rivalry between Marvel’s monumental crossover event and James Cameron’s iconic sci-fi film has been a significant part of modern cinema history. For years, these two cinematic giants have vied for the title of the highest-grossing film ever, and this competition is about to heat up again, seven years after the original showdown.

This rivalry began in 2019 when ‘Avengers: Endgame‘ briefly took the crown from ‘Avatar’ as the all-time box office champion, following a theatrical run that included a special re-release with bonus footage. However, this victory was short-lived, as Disney’s 2021 re-release of ‘Avatar’ in China allowed Cameron’s film to reclaim its title, pushing its worldwide total to just over $2.923 billion.

Now, Marvel is gearing up for another attempt at the title. ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ returning to theaters on September 25 as ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore,’ needs to earn over $200 million to become the first-ever $3 billion movie. However, a more realistic goal is to surpass ‘Avatar’ by earning approximately $125 million globally, which would restore its position as the highest-grossing film of all time.

The gap has significantly narrowed in recent months. Current figures indicate that ‘Endgame’ has amassed around $2.799 billion worldwide, leaving it just $124 million shy of ‘Avatar’s’ $2.924 billion total, making this target seem much more achievable than when the re-release was first announced.

Unlike typical nostalgia-driven re-releases, ‘Endgame Encore’ comes with real narrative stakes. This new version features previously unseen footage that connects directly to December’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Co-director Joe Russo described the re-release to Deadline as creating “a bridge” between the two films, rather than merely rehashing old material for a quick profit.

This added incentive gives ‘Endgame Encore’ a stronger appeal than most theatrical re-releases, especially for fans eager to see how the new footage ties into Marvel’s next major crossover event. Audiences looking for the complete experience are encouraged to watch in IMAX or Disney’s newly launched Infinity Vision format, both of which will showcase the film’s extended cut.

Marvel’s recent box office success further adds to the excitement surrounding this rematch. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has already achieved a remarkable $360 million domestic opening weekend, surpassing ‘Endgame’s’ previous domestic opening record of $357 million, highlighting the shifting landscape of theatrical releases as ‘Endgame’ continues to rise back up the charts.

Whether ‘Endgame Encore’ will successfully reclaim the all-time crown from ‘Avatar’ remains uncertain, but the numbers indicate that this rematch is closer than anyone anticipated for a film nearing its eighth anniversary. With the re-release arriving just months before ‘Doomsday’ hits theaters, Marvel seems determined to make this comeback attempt count.
