‘Lanterns’ Achieves Record Audience with Episode 3 and a Bold Creative Choice
HBO’s ‘Green Lantern’ series debuted earlier this year with high expectations, being one of DC Studios’ first significant live-action projects under James Gunn and Peter Safran, and featuring acclaimed writers Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof. Those expectations intensified when the show’s premiere numbers confirmed the buzz was justified.
‘Lanterns’ opened with impressive ratings back in August, attracting over 9 million viewers worldwide within its first three days, making it the biggest premiere for a DC Studios show on HBO Max to date. This momentum has continued to build week after week, a rare achievement for a new series still establishing its audience.
This week, ‘Lanterns’ reached a new milestone, as its third episode garnered its highest audience yet, with Warner Bros. Discovery reporting that the installment drew 10 million viewers globally on HBO Max, marking a new series high, according to Variety.
Much of this surge appears linked to a creative risk taken in the third episode, titled “OutKast.” Instead of advancing the central mystery surrounding a small-town Nebraska murder investigation, the episode took a pause, dedicating its entire runtime to a nonlinear origin story for John Stewart, framed as a job interview with one of the Guardians of the Universe, portrayed by Laura Linney.
This gamble resulted in a significant increase in audience reception. According to ComicBasics, “OutKast” debuted with a 9.4 score on IMDb, a noticeable rise from the 8.3 ratings of the first two episodes. Such a leap so early in the series suggests that the character-focused detour resonated with viewers in a way the slower-paced opening episodes did not.
Episode 3 delved into John Stewart’s backstory, illustrating how Aaron Pierre’s character had been preparing under his parents’ guidance to eventually take on the Green Lantern mantle from Kyle Chandler’s veteran Hal Jordan, as reported by Variety. This focused character study clearly struck a chord with audiences seeking more emotional depth beyond the show’s mystery-of-the-week format.

In addition to this week’s achievement, ‘Lanterns’ has consistently surpassed expectations set by previous DC Studios releases on the platform. According to Deadline, the show’s premiere outperformed the launches of several major HBO tentpoles, including “IT: Welcome to Derry,” “The Penguin,” and “True Detective: Night Country,” placing ‘Lanterns’ among the top five series launches in HBO Max’s history.
The pilot episode alone has now attracted over 20 million viewers worldwide, maintaining its position as the No. 1 title on HBO Max’s daily Top 10 list for weeks following its debut. This consistency, combined with Episode 3’s breakout reception, indicates that ‘Lanterns’ has built genuine momentum rather than relying solely on initial curiosity.
With John Stewart’s origin story now fully explored, ‘Lanterns’ faces the challenge of maintaining this elevated audience reaction as the show returns to its central Rushville investigation in upcoming episodes. Co-created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Eisner Award-winning comics writer Tom King, the series continues to air new episodes Sunday nights, with Nathan Fillion set to join later in the season as fellow Lantern Corps member Guy Gardner.
Whether the show can sustain this newfound momentum as it resumes advancing its main plotline remains one of the most intriguing questions for the remainder of the season.
