Multiverse crossovers leave a significant impact on the characters involved, even after everything settles back into its own reality. ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ showcased this concept brilliantly, bringing together three generations of Peter Parkers on screen for the first time, fulfilling a long-held dream for fans.

The crossover’s influence extended behind the scenes as well. Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, after meeting Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s versions, carried that experience into ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ leading to a costume redesign that honors his fellow web-slingers.

In a behind-the-scenes video shared by Sony Pictures, Holland elaborated on the thought process behind the new suit. “When we decided that we’re going to make Spider-Man: Brand New Day, we said, what if we made a suit that was an homage to Tobey and Andrew’s designs because my Peter Parker had met those guys. So we kind of created a Spider-Child of all three costumes,” Holland stated, as reported by GamesRadar+.

This “Spider-Child” concept translated into various specific design elements inspired by Garfield’s and Maguire’s costumes. Costume designer Sanja Milkovic Hays confirmed in an interview that fan theories about the suit’s inspirations were correct, addressing elements like the web-shooters and mask design that fans had already begun analyzing online.

One notable detail is the web-shooters themselves. According to JustWatch, Garfield’s Amazing Spider-Man films featured compact web-shooters mounted on the outside of the suit, a design choice that significantly influenced Holland’s new costume, with web-shooters similarly magnetized to the outside of his outfit in ‘Brand New Day.’

The homage goes beyond just gadgets. Director Destin Daniel Cretton noted that the new mask allows viewers to see glimpses of the “human” beneath the costume, moving away from the tech-heavy face shield to something that feels more grounded, reminiscent of the practical, homemade aesthetic Peter Parker created without Stark technology.

In addition to the main suit redesign, ‘Brand New Day’ also features a smaller yet significant nod to Garfield’s era. Behind-the-scenes footage titled “Practical Production,” released by Sony, showed Holland’s Spider-Man in a winter-adapted outfit layered over his base suit, complete with a stocking cap and puffer vest to combat the cold during filming.

This specific styling choice echoes a memorable scene from ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2,’ where Garfield’s Peter Parker bundled up against the cold while still intervening in a robbery, despite being visibly unwell. This detail became one of the more discussed Easter eggs once fans recognized the connection in the new footage.

With Holland’s Peter Parker now operating without Stark tech, having to create his own gear from scratch after the memory-erasing spell at the end of ‘No Way Home,’ the new suit’s homemade, patchwork aesthetic makes narrative sense alongside its tribute to Garfield and Maguire’s legacies. The costume effectively merges three eras of Spider-Man storytelling into one cohesive design.

Given the attention fans have paid to these details since the film’s release, it’s evident that the tribute resonated deeply with longtime followers of the franchise.
