Nicolas Cage Responds to ‘Spider-Noir’ Cancellation News
Not every cancellation announcement receives a direct response from the actor involved, but ‘Spider-Noir’ star Nicolas Cage is not one to remain silent for long. The series had already garnered attention for its striking visual style and genre-defying tone since its debut earlier this year, and its sudden conclusion adds another layer to that narrative.
On September 4, Prime Video and MGM+ confirmed that the show would not be renewed for a second season, marking the end of Cage’s first regular role in episodic television. This decision surprised many, especially considering the series had received positive critical acclaim since its release.
Cage has now shared his thoughts, expressing a sense of acceptance regarding the show’s end. In a statement provided exclusively to Deadline, he mentioned that one season felt just right, as he had conveyed everything he wanted to with this daring, innovative, pop-art interpretation of Spider-Man, adding that he is ready to move forward.
This sentiment aligns with Cage’s earlier comments from the show’s May premiere, where he expressed a desire to explore new creative avenues for both himself and the audience, likening the visual style to a Roy Lichtenstein painting. This perspective suggests that Cage viewed ‘Spider-Noir’ as a complete artistic endeavor rather than the beginning of a long-term franchise.
In ‘Spider-Noir,’ Cage portrayed Ben Reilly, a struggling private investigator in 1930s New York who confronts his past as the city’s only masked hero. The character first appeared in the Oscar-winning animated film ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,’ but this live-action series presented a distinct narrative separate from that film.
The show featured an ensemble cast, including Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, Abraham Popoola, Jack Huston, and Brendan Gleeson, creating a noir-inspired world that critics generally praised. The cancellation is particularly disappointing given the series received 11 Emmy Award nominations and boasted a 92 percent critics rating alongside a 90 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite the show’s cancellation, Cage will not be stepping away from Prime Video. He is set to star in the upcoming biopic ‘Madden,’ where he will portray the legendary NFL coach and broadcaster John Madden, expected to release later this year. This project should keep Cage in the good graces of the streamer even as ‘Spider-Noir’ concludes.
There are also ongoing discussions about Cage potentially joining other prestigious television projects. Reports from last summer linked him to the lead role in season 5 of HBO’s ‘True Detective,’ although there have been no updates on that front since the initial speculation.
For now, fans of ‘Spider-Noir’ are left with a single season that concluded on its own terms rather than a cliffhanger, something Cage seems to view as a positive aspect rather than a drawback. Whether the character may return in some form in the future remains uncertain, but Cage’s comments indicate he holds no resentment regarding the series’ conclusion.
The cancellation news comes during a particularly busy period for Cage, who is managing the aftermath of ‘Spider-Noir’ while also preparing for ‘Madden’ and whatever comes next in his famously unpredictable career. Few actors seem as adept at transitioning between wildly different projects, and this latest chapter is no exception.
