Long before Joe and Anthony Russo took the helm of Marvel’s grand ensemble films, they honed their skills in a different kind of chaos. The duo spent their early careers guiding the quirky Bluth family in ‘Arrested Development’ and the complex friend group in ‘Community,’ developing a directing style adept at managing large casts with unique personalities.

This foundation has served the Russos well as they tackle some of Hollywood’s most ambitious crossover films, with ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ poised to be their greatest challenge yet. The film is set to hit theaters on December 18, following years of speculation about the multitude of Marvel multiverse elements it will bring together.

According to Anthony Russo, this expansive scope is intentional. He referred to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a grand experiment in the limits of ensemble storytelling, emphasizing that he and his brother feel uniquely prepared to push these boundaries, thanks to their extensive experience with the format.

The scale of this project becomes evident when considering the cast. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ unites the core Avengers, the Wakandans, the New Avengers from Earth-616, the Fantastic Four from Earth-828, and the original X-Men, making even the Russos’ previous Marvel endeavors seem modest by comparison.

Anthony traced his and Joe’s affinity for ensemble storytelling back to their roots, noting that their collaborative nature has shaped their understanding of group dynamics on screen. Joe echoed this sentiment, highlighting their upbringing in a large Italian family filled with vibrant personalities and intricate dynamics as early training for managing extensive casts.

The brothers discussed the project separately in recent interviews, balancing their time between finalizing post-production on ‘Doomsday,’ which includes scoring and editing, while also beginning preparations for its 2027 sequel, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’ This overlapping workload highlights the significant commitment this current phase of the MCU represents for the directing pair.

This isn’t the first time the Russos have tackled a crossover of this scale. Since their earlier Marvel projects, they have established a reputation for making sprawling ensembles feel cohesive rather than overcrowded, a skill that made them the ideal choice for this next chapter of Avengers films.

The film’s box office potential adds to the pressure. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has already grossed approximately $2.3 billion worldwide, positioning it to rival the box office success of previous Avengers-level blockbusters, indicating a strong appetite for large-scale Marvel storytelling as ‘Doomsday’ approaches its release.

With so many characters, timelines, and multiverse elements converging in one film, the Russos are essentially banking on their extensive experience with ensemble work to scale up once more. Whether ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ successfully achieves this balance will only be revealed when audiences finally see it this December, but the directors appear confident in their instincts honed over decades of practice.

For now, fans are left to speculate how all these distinct corners of the Marvel multiverse will intersect when the film is released. Given the ambitious scale described, ‘Doomsday’ is set to be one of the most daring ensemble efforts the franchise has ever undertaken.
