The ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise has spent over two decades centered around the theme of family, encompassing both biological ties and the loyal crew that has defined the series since its inception. This theme has made the loss of Paul Walker particularly poignant for fans, and the franchise has navigated this sensitive issue with care since his tragic passing during the production of ‘Furious 7’ in 2013.

Walker’s death compelled Universal to make a heartfelt decision, utilizing his younger brothers, Cody and Caleb, along with early digital techniques to finish his final scenes as Brian O’Conner. The character received a touching farewell, driving off into the sunset with Dominic Toretto, a choice that was widely applauded for honoring Walker’s legacy.

As the franchise moves towards its anticipated conclusion with ‘Fast Forever,’ scheduled for release on March 17, 2028, Vin Diesel has hinted that Brian O’Conner will play a role in the story once again. This announcement has sparked renewed speculation about how the character might return to the screen, especially given the significant advancements in technology since the methods used back in 2015.

Cody Walker has clarified that he will not participate in bringing his brother’s character back this time. “My stance is, it’s what Meadow wants to see done; it’s her father,” Cody told Entertainment Weekly, referring to Paul’s daughter, Meadow Walker, who previously appeared in ‘Fast X.’ “I would not be interested in doing that again. I love the way his character exited the franchise. They didn’t kill him off; they didn’t do something cheesy like that. It’s beautiful; [Brian] is off raising his kids.”

Instead of serving as a body double as he did for ‘Furious 7,’ Cody suggested that artificial intelligence could be the more viable option if the studio decides to proceed with bringing Brian back on screen. “But if they want to do that, if Meadow would like to see that, they don’t need me or Caleb,” he explained. “AI was not a thing back in 2014, so they could do that. There’s years of footage that was never used from these other Fast films. They’re the best in the business; they can figure that out.”

This approach would represent a significant departure from how the franchise managed Walker’s final scenes over a decade ago, opting instead for unused archival footage combined with modern AI tools rather than relying on a body double for physical performance. This method has become increasingly prevalent in Hollywood, though it has sparked controversy due to the ethical dilemmas surrounding the digital recreation of deceased performers.

Diesel initially hinted at Brian’s possible return during a 2025 FuelFest car event, sharing with the audience that his conditions for the finale included bringing the franchise back to Los Angeles, returning to its street-racing roots, and reuniting Dom with Brian O’Conner in some form. Universal has since confirmed the film’s official title and release date, although specifics about how Walker’s character will be integrated into the story remain uncertain.

With the ultimate decision resting in Meadow Walker’s hands, fans are left in anticipation of whether the franchise will attempt to bring Brian O’Conner back to the screen, and if so, how tastefully that return can be executed using AI-assisted technology and years of unused footage. Given the careful treatment of Walker’s exit previously, expectations for getting this right will likely be just as high.

For a series that has always emphasized its emotional core on family, how it chooses to honor Paul Walker’s legacy in this final chapter may prove to be just as significant as the film itself.
