First Look at Henry Cavill and Kevin Hart in Upcoming Spy Comedy ‘Spy Duo’
Henry Cavill has established himself in serious roles, from Superman to Geralt, while Kevin Hart has become one of Hollywood’s go-to comedic stars. The combination of these two talents may sound like a fan’s dream, but Netflix is bringing it to life with their upcoming spy comedy.
The film, titled ‘Spy Duo,’ has been in the works for several months, first announced in May with McG set to direct. Since then, details about the film’s storyline, cast, and production schedule have emerged, generating excitement for what promises to be one of Netflix’s more unique buddy comedies.
Fans have now received their first behind-the-scenes glimpse of Cavill and Hart on set, with new images showcasing the duo filming in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. The photos reveal Cavill in an all-black outfit with a suede jacket, perched on a red Triumph motorcycle, while Hart sports a casual look in a Joy Division t-shirt and plaid pajama pants, hinting at the domestic side of his character’s double life.
Production officially began on August 31, and current plans indicate that filming will continue through the fall, wrapping just before Thanksgiving on November 23. The shooting locations span New Jersey and France, providing an international backdrop that aligns with the film’s espionage theme.
The storyline follows Cavill and Hart as rival spies whose secret lives intersect when their pregnant wives become friends in a Lamaze class. They are forced into an uneasy partnership, navigating both fatherhood and their increasingly perilous missions, a concept that contrasts Cavill’s polished action-hero image with Hart’s comedic flair.
Joining the cast are Jason Isaacs, Justine Lupe, and Aja Naomi King, adding significant dramatic depth alongside the comedic leads. The screenplay is penned by a talented team, including Wendy and Lizzie Molyneux, known for ‘Bob’s Burgers’ and ‘The Great North,’ along with Adam and Aaron Nee of ‘Masters of the Universe,’ and Jonathan Tropper, who previously wrote ‘The Adam Project.’
Behind the scenes, McG, known for ‘Charlie’s Angels’ and ‘The Babysitter,’ is at the helm, bringing experience in merging action with humor. The production team is equally impressive, featuring Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat banner, Ryan Reynolds through Maximum Effort, and Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment, the creative force behind hits like ‘Free Guy’ and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’
Interestingly, set signs seen during filming hinted at the working title “The Serpent and the Snake,” accompanied by artwork depicting two silhouetted spies with guns drawn. It remains uncertain whether this is merely a production code name or a potential alternate title for the final film.
With filming still underway and no official release date announced, ‘Spy Duo’ is anticipated to debut on Netflix in the latter half of 2027. Given the talent involved both in front of and behind the camera, expectations are high for a genuinely entertaining action-comedy that showcases both leads in a new light.
For Cavill, this project adds to an increasingly diverse portfolio that already includes ‘Voltron,’ ‘Highlander,’ and ‘The Rosie Project,’ proving he is not confined to heroic roles. For Hart, it presents a fresh comedic partnership after years of collaborations with Dwayne Johnson.
