John Mulaney Stole the Show at the Emmys With a Hilarious Presenter Bit Targeting Streamers
Award show presenter segments typically serve to fill the gaps between the categories that viewers actually care about, offering a brief introduction before the envelope is opened. However, there are moments when a comedian takes the mic and transforms those thirty seconds into a highlight that everyone discusses the next day.
This was precisely the case at this year’s Emmy Awards, where the evening’s standout comedic moment did not originate from the host or a scripted sketch. Instead, it emerged from a presenter segment that many viewers likely anticipated would be forgettable.
John Mulaney stepped onto the stage to introduce the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series category, and instead of merely listing the nominees, he began with a sharp critique of the streaming industry itself. “It’s these couple of days where you find out just how much you mean to your billion-dollar streamer,” Mulaney quipped, mimicking the empty praise that talent often receives from their platforms during awards season, saying, “‘We love you. We want you to know how important you are to this storytelling family.’ ‘Can I get a plus-one?’ ‘Get out of here.'”
The line resonated particularly well given that Mulaney’s current streaming home is Netflix, adding an extra layer of self-aware irony that TheWrap highlighted, noting that it was certainly not Netflix he was referring to. Mulaney then seamlessly transitioned into a longer routine centered on the notion that men have historically been underrepresented on television.
“This is the best part of the night. Lead actor in a drama, this award is for the guys. Finally, something for the fellas,” Mulaney joked, characterizing the nominees as “a crop of prom kings” who weren’t “soft like the dad on ‘Bluey.'” He further elaborated on the bit, claiming that during the first three years of television, “there were no men on it,” just “beauty contests and children talking to hand puppets” until a fictional turning point arrived with Fonzie.
Mulaney continued to poke fun at the nominees, remarking that “some of the men in this category do Method acting, and some do regular, less annoying acting,” while pointing out that regardless of their technique, they all managed to memorize their lines because they’d started reviewing their sides earlier that morning. He even referenced DJ Khaled’s notorious views on marital intimacy, a line so pointed that NBC’s standards and practices team ended up bleeping it entirely.

After Mulaney wrapped up his jokes, the actual award was presented to Noah Wyle for his performance in ‘The Pitt,’ making the winner feel almost secondary compared to the buildup Mulaney had just delivered. This moment fits into a broader trend for the comedian, who has earned a reputation for turning even minor hosting or presenting roles into some of the sharpest material at any event.
Critics covering the event quickly noted how much energy Mulaney infused into what could have easily been a throwaway moment, with several outlets suggesting that the Television Academy should simply give him hosting duties next year. Between the jab at streamers, the gender-flipped bit, and the bleeped punchline, Mulaney succeeded in transforming a routine presenter segment into one of the most quoted moments of the entire broadcast.
For a ceremony already filled with historic wins and emotional speeches, it’s noteworthy that a two-minute presenter bit ended up dominating so much of the post-show discussion.
