Blockbuster box office runs typically lose momentum after a few weeks, but Sony and Marvel’s latest Spider-Man film has defied that trend. Since its debut on July 31, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has spent nearly two months rewriting the domestic box office record books, achieving milestone after milestone.

The film kicked off its historic run with a staggering $360 million opening weekend, surpassing ‘Avengers: Endgame’ for the largest domestic debut ever. Following that, it became the fastest film to reach $700 million and $800 million, eventually becoming only the second movie in history to surpass $900 million domestically, joining 2015’s ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ in this exclusive club.

Currently, the film is on the brink of claiming the biggest record of all. As of this weekend, ‘Brand New Day’ has amassed approximately $935.9 million domestically, putting it just shy of ‘The Force Awakens’ all-time domestic record of $936,662,225. Given its consistent daily earnings, industry experts widely anticipate that it will officially break the record within the next day or so.

This timing is crucial because ‘The Force Awakens’ final total was not finalized immediately after its initial run. The 2015 Star Wars film added around $500,000 to its total during a 2016 re-release, meaning ‘Brand New Day’ must exceed that adjusted figure to fully claim the all-time crown.

‘The Force Awakens’ has held the domestic box office record since its release under Disney and Lucasfilm, maintaining its position for nearly ten years without a serious contender. Although ‘Avengers: Endgame’ came close in 2019 with $858.3 million, it ultimately fell short of Star Wars’ benchmark, until ‘Brand New Day’ quietly surpassed it earlier this month.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and featuring Tom Holland alongside Zendaya, Sadie Sink, and Jon Bernthal, ‘Brand New Day’ has also been breaking records globally, having already surpassed $2 billion worldwide, making it Sony’s highest-grossing release ever. With a “Certified Fresh” 90 percent critics’ score and a “Verified Hot” 97 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film’s box office success has been matched by strong acclaim from both critics and audiences alike.

Once ‘Brand New Day’ officially surpasses ‘The Force Awakens,’ it will stand alone at the top of the all-time domestic chart, a distinction that, given the significant gap between it and the films below, could realistically remain for years. For a franchise many believed had peaked with ‘No Way Home,’ this latest installment has shown that there is still plenty of room to soar higher.
