‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ is approaching its theatrical release, and fans are now pondering not just the film’s plot, but also the necessary viewing to prepare. With years of spin-offs, streaming series, and multiverse explorations, diving into the MCU has become increasingly complex.

Previously, the straightforward answer to “what should I watch?” was “everything,” which can be overwhelming for casual viewers. Directed by the Russo brothers and featuring a vast ensemble cast, the film is set to premiere on December 18, with Robert Downey Jr. starring as Doctor Doom.

In response, Disney+ has provided fans with an official shortcut. As reported by MCU Film News, the streaming service has launched a “Countdown to Avengers: Doomsday” playlist that highlights essential titles to watch beforehand, marked in green. This collection is prominently displayed in the app’s featured rows, just above a separate MCU Infinity Saga section.

According to reports, the playlist consists of 15 titles, including 14 films and 1 TV show. It kicks off with the original ‘X-Men’ and ‘X2’, then progresses through ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’, ‘The Avengers’, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, and ‘Avengers: Endgame’. It also covers the multiverse era with titles like ‘Loki’, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’.

The remaining titles bring viewers up to speed, including ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’, ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’, ‘Captain America: Brave New World’, ‘Thunderbolts’, and ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’. Notably, ‘Loki’ is the only Disney+ series included, which is fitting given its focus on timelines, variants, and alternate realities.

The selected titles align well with the film’s anticipated crossovers. Actors from the Fox-era ‘X-Men’, such as Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and Kelsey Grammer, are set to return, which explains the prominence of the first two ‘X-Men’ films in the countdown.

As always, the exclusions are garnering attention as much as the inclusions. Notably absent are the ‘Iron Man’ films, despite Downey Jr.’s return as the villain rather than as Tony Stark. The ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ films and ‘WandaVision’ are also missing.

The most talked-about omission is ‘The Marvels’. Its post-credits scene features Monica Rambeau meeting Grammer’s Beast in an alternate universe, a character confirmed for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. Forbes has noted that some of the selected films may contain clues, as they feature characters not yet announced for the movie.

The playlist also suggests the film’s narrative direction. As the penultimate chapter of the Multiverse Saga, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ is set to follow on December 17, 2027. Official descriptions indicate that the Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, and X-Men will confront Doctor Doom.

The film boasts a star-studded cast, including Pedro Pascal, Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, and Simu Liu. Chris Evans is also confirmed to reprise his role as Steve Rogers, which explains the inclusion of the original ‘Captain America’ film on the list, as confirmed by the first teaser.

For newcomers, this playlist offers a rare opportunity: a clear, studio-approved pathway through two decades of Marvel storytelling. For longtime fans, it serves as a fresh excuse to revisit beloved films and search for hidden clues about the upcoming movie. Either way, it transforms the wait for December into a more engaging countdown.
