Few TV shows have influenced a decade’s aesthetic and sound quite like ‘Miami Vice’ did in the 1980s. The series introduced pastel suits, neon skylines, and pulsating synth soundtracks, turning its undercover detectives into iconic figures of style. Now, a new generation is set to experience these characters in a fresh light.

Universal’s upcoming film ‘Miami Vice ’85’ has been in the works for over a year, with Joseph Kosinski directing and Dan Gilroy penning the screenplay. This film draws inspiration from the pilot episode and the first season of the NBC series, which aired from 1984 to 1989, featuring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas in the lead roles. Michael Mann, who was the executive producer of the show, later created his own film adaptation in 2006 with Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.

Now, the first official images have been released. Michael B. Jordan is seen portraying Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs in a striking long black leather coat, set against a pale backdrop. Meanwhile, Austin Butler takes on the role of James “Sonny” Crockett, aiming a pistol while dressed in a gray jacket adorned with a gold watch. Each image features the character’s name in bold lettering alongside the film’s logo, and a first poster has also been unveiled.

The visuals embrace the moody and stylish essence that made the original series legendary. Jordan’s Tubbs exudes cool confidence, while Butler’s Crockett is captured in a dynamic action pose, highlighting the contrasting nature of their partnership.

Unlike the 2006 adaptation, this film is officially set as a period piece. Its logline hints at a narrative exploring the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami, where immense wealth collides with drug-trade violence. This setting offers Kosinski ample opportunity to delve into the era’s unique aesthetic.

Reports indicate that production is currently underway in Miami. Kosinski is filming in IMAX, continuing the large-format technique he employed in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and ‘F1,’ both of which received Best Picture Oscar nominations.

While Kosinski has remained relatively tight-lipped about his vision, the casting choices and filming format suggest a grand, immersive interpretation of the source material. Fans of the original series are likely to appreciate the decision to set the story in the same time period, signaling a commitment to the show’s legacy rather than a modern reinterpretation.

Jordan, who recently earned the best actor Oscar for ‘Sinners,’ leads the cast alongside Butler, an Oscar nominee for ‘Elvis.’ The supporting ensemble is impressive, featuring John Leguizamo, Alden Ehrenreich, Walton Goggins, André Holland, Andrew Schulz, Danny Ramirez, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, and Edi Gathegi. Michael Irby has also joined the cast, according to recent updates.

Many of these cast members have been announced over the past few months, building excitement for the film. Ramirez previously collaborated with Kosinski on ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ making his involvement a reunion. Goggins and Leguizamo appear well-suited for the film’s criminal elements.

Universal has scheduled the film for release on May 19, 2028, moving it from its original date of August 6, 2027. This new timing positions it in the early summer corridor, an ideal slot for a major blockbuster. The delay allows for additional preparation time, meaning fans will have to wait a bit longer.

Despite the wait, the first look is a promising start. It demonstrates the filmmakers’ dedication to the style and attitude that made the original series so impactful. With two Oscar-recognized leads and a director known for his successful films, expectations are soaring.

Online reactions have been fervent, as fans compare the new duo to the original. Early feedback indicates that the images have been well-received, though the true test will come when audiences finally see the film in action. For now, the neon lights are back on.
