Ana Nogueira is emerging as a pivotal writer for the future of the DC Universe. After dedicating years to the upcoming ‘Supergirl’ movie, the screenwriter has now been entrusted with several significant DC projects, including the live-action ‘Teen Titans’ movie and a new ‘Wonder Woman’ film.

In a recent interview with Variety, Nogueira discussed her journey with DC and how her work on ‘Supergirl’ opened doors to more opportunities within the franchise. Initially brought on to write a script for ‘Supergirl’ when it was being developed as a potential spin-off from ‘The Flash’, her role evolved after James Gunn and Peter Safran took the helm at DC Studios, steering the franchise in a new direction.

According to Nogueira, Gunn and Safran were so impressed with her vision for ‘Supergirl’ that they decided to keep her on board for additional projects.

“I’ve been screenwriting for a long time, and you can go through drafts and drafts and drafts, and it doesn’t happen, or it gets really close, you’re about to be greenlit and something falls apart, so for it all to happen so quickly was nuts and abnormal, for sure,” Nogueira told Variety.

Her upcoming major assignments include writing the new ‘Teen Titans’ movie and a ‘Wonder Woman’ project. Both films are anticipated to play crucial roles in the future of the DC Universe as the studio continues to build a new interconnected franchise.

However, this news has sparked concern among DC fans. While Nogueira’s involvement has garnered support from Gunn and Safran, some fans remain apprehensive due to the mixed reactions surrounding ‘Supergirl’.

Critics have pointed out various issues with the film, with many agreeing that the script is lacking. This has led to questions about whether Nogueira is the right choice to shape more significant DC stories, particularly with ‘Teen Titans’ and ‘Wonder Woman’ on the horizon.

Another significant topic of discussion among fans revolves around how Nogueira adapted Tom King’s ‘Woman of Tomorrow’ comic for ‘Supergirl’. The comic is highly esteemed by many readers, and some believe the film alters key aspects of Kara Zor-El’s journey and the story’s conclusion.

Nogueira has stated that the ending of ‘Supergirl’, where Kara kills Krem, was always intended as part of the film’s narrative. Nogueira confirmed that this was included from the very first pitch, explaining, “The ending between Kara and Krem was always in it, from the pitch — truly from the very beginning.” She added, “Because the comic ends with Ruthye killing him, but in the far, far future. We knew we weren’t gonna be able to do that kind of time jump.”

However, this interpretation has been challenged, as Krem ultimately survives in the original comic. The comic concludes with an elderly Ruthye reuniting with Supergirl and Krypto, revealing that Krem has spent many years in the Phantom Zone and has come to regret his past actions. Instead of killing him, Ruthye merely strikes him with her walking stick before departing with Kara and Krypto, leaving Krem alive.

Tom King also confirmed Krem’s survival during an episode of Comic Book Couples Counseling podcast in 2024.

Nogueira explained to Variety that she aimed to create a unique version of the story while preserving its emotional essence. She noted that adapting the comic required adjustments, as certain elements translate better on the page than on screen.

“There are all these little things that work in comics, but then suddenly in a script, they don’t work,” Nogueira remarked.

Despite the concerns, DC Studios seems confident in her capabilities. Nogueira expressed her gratitude for the trust placed in her by Gunn and Safran, stating, “It’s a huge compliment and a vote of confidence. It’s honestly quite overwhelming,” she shared.

With ‘Teen Titans’ and ‘Wonder Woman’ still in the early stages of development, Nogueira holds a significant role in shaping the future of DC. The extent to which fans’ concerns diminish or escalate will likely hinge on how audiences respond to her forthcoming projects.
