‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Gets New UK Release Date Ahead of December Premiere
Marvel enthusiasts often find themselves eagerly counting down the days leading up to a major release, so any surprise adjustments are always appreciated. With the next Avengers installment just months away, one of its key markets has received an unexpected advantage. Here’s what has changed and why it’s significant for the rollout of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.
The film has experienced a rocky journey to its release schedule. Disney initially postponed ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ from its planned May 1, 2026 date to December 18, 2026, allowing filmmakers additional time to refine the project. Following the departure of Jonathan Majors as the primary antagonist, Marvel revamped the storyline, bringing back Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom and reuniting with the Russo brothers for direction.
Now, the UK is set to receive a small yet significant gift. Disney has officially announced that the film’s UK release date has been moved up from December 18 to December 16, as first reported by Empire magazine and confirmed by Disney to Digital Spy. This means that British audiences will get to see the film two days earlier than the December 18 release in other regions.
The earlier UK date isn’t surprising. According to Empire, both ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ debuted in UK cinemas a day or two ahead of their broader international releases, while ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ also premiered in the UK a couple of days before its US and Canadian launch.
Signs had been pointing in this direction for weeks. In June, reports indicated that Brazil would premiere the film on December 16, and IMDb’s release listings showed Italy and Norway for the same date. Earlier this month, UK cinema chain Cineworld listed December 16 as the standard release date, and fans noticed a US advance screening scheduled for the same date at a California theater.
Early international releases are a common strategy for major films. One source noted that studios often implement them to generate global excitement and to mitigate piracy risks in specific regions.

The new date also fits neatly into a busy pre-Christmas schedule. ‘Dune: Part Three’ is set for preview screenings starting December 15, making the earlier ‘Doomsday’ release a great opportunity for UK moviegoers to enjoy both of the season’s major films without overlap. Empire humorously suggested that fans could fit in extra visits to Latveria and Arrakis before the ultimate geeky double feature.
Anticipation is already at an all-time high. TheWrap reported that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has already amassed over $50 million in presales and is projected to challenge the $360 million domestic opening record set by ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and the $1.22 billion global opening record held by ‘Avengers: Endgame’. A two-day head start for the UK only adds to the sense of an event rollout.
The timeline for the film’s completion is tight. Principal photography took place from April to September 2025 at Pinewood Studios in England, but additional filming continued well into the summer. Joe Russo mentioned in June that the team expected to keep working until November, with the directors stating that the movie is currently in editing and scoring while they prepare for ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.
This late-stage work has caused some concern among fans, especially with reports of Marvel continuously adding cameos. Nevertheless, the confirmed early UK release date is a reassuring indication that the release strategy is on track. The cast is extensive, combining MCU regulars with veterans from the X-Men films in a narrative centered around intersecting universes.
Before the main event, Marvel is gearing up audiences with ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’, which is set to arrive on September 25, featuring special footage and an extended runtime for IMAX and Infinity Vision screenings. This re-release serves as a preview of what’s to come in December. Following that, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ is slated for release on December 17, 2027.
