Hong Kong Disneyland has been steadily expanding its Marvel presence for nearly a decade, starting with the announcement of Stark Expo in Tomorrowland. The Iron Man Experience debuted in 2017, followed by Ant-Man and The Wasp: Nano Battle two years later, providing fans with two exciting Marvel attractions while they awaited a promised third.

The journey to that third project has been tumultuous. An Avengers Quinjet attraction was initially announced for the area, leading to the closure of Autopia in 2016 to make space. However, the ride mysteriously disappeared from Disney’s plans without much clarification. It wasn’t until 2024 that Hong Kong Disneyland confirmed the expansion was still on track, revealing a revamped concept focused on Spider-Man instead of the long-abandoned Quinjet idea.

This new vision has made significant progress. At D23’s Imagineering pavilion this week, Disney showcased a physical model of the upcoming Marvel-themed land, offering fans their clearest glimpse yet at the drop tower attraction and the surrounding Stark Expo buildings.

The model builds upon concept art released by Disney last September, confirming that the ride will feature a Tower of Terror-style freefall system with multiple Marvel characters, not just Spider-Man. The earlier artwork showcased Doctor Strange, Thor, Black Panther, and Spider-Man in action as riders plummet, with Asgard visible in the backdrop and Captain America welcoming guests near the entrance.

The path from announcement to model has taken longer than Disney initially planned. The Marvel-themed area was first revealed in 2016 as part of a significant expansion for Hong Kong Disneyland. However, due to the shelved Quinjet concept and years of silence regarding new attractions, fans had ample reason to question if the project would ever materialize.

Once Disney confirmed the shift towards a Spider-Man-focused drop tower during D23 2024, momentum began to build, culminating in last year’s expanded concept art and this week’s physical model. The building is expected to house what Disney has termed the Research Testing Labs, complete with a satellite dish aimed skyward, linking the attraction’s theming to the Stark-tech storytelling found throughout Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure.

The Hong Kong model was not displayed alone. WDW News Today’s on-site coverage confirmed that the model was part of a broader showcase of international park projects within Disney’s Imagineering pavilion, which also featured an upcoming Wreck-It Ralph attraction, a reimagined Space Mountain for Tokyo Disneyland, a Spider-Man project for Shanghai Disneyland, and a Lion King attraction currently under construction at Disneyland Paris.

This showcase highlights Disney’s current focus on theme park projects overseas, with Imagineers working on multiple initiatives across different continents. Reports indicate that over 150 Imagineers are staffing the pavilion throughout the D23 weekend to provide fans with detailed insights into these international developments.

No official opening date has been announced for the Hong Kong drop tower, and the ride still lacks a confirmed title. However, with a full-scale model now on display and years of fluctuating development behind it, the Avengers’ latest addition in Hong Kong finally seems to be transitioning from concept to construction.
