Billie Eilish Looks Unrecognizable in New Set Photos from ‘The Bell Jar’
The transition from musician to serious dramatic actor has become a notable journey in Hollywood, especially when it involves adapting one of the most haunting novels of the twentieth century. This is the challenge facing one of pop music’s biggest stars as she takes on her first lead film role.
Fans are doing a double take this week as new images have emerged, showcasing just how deeply the singer has immersed herself in her character. Known for her distinctive style both on and off stage, Billie Eilish’s transformation is striking.
Eilish appeared nearly unrecognizable in new set photos from Sarah Polley’s adaptation of ‘The Bell Jar,’ which is currently filming in Toronto. The images depict Eilish in a red round-neck top and a red checkered skirt, fully embodying the 1950s aesthetic of Sylvia Plath’s iconic protagonist, Esther Greenwood.
This marks Eilish’s first major feature film acting role, following her earlier appearance in the 2023 Amazon series ‘Swarm.’ The production, backed by Focus Features, has been filming on location in Toronto since late June and is expected to continue through early September.
Academy Award winner Sarah Polley is both writing and directing this adaptation, marking her fifth feature as a filmmaker after acclaimed projects like ‘Women Talking,’ ‘Stories We Tell,’ ‘Away From Her,’ and ‘Take This Waltz.’ Polley won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for ‘Women Talking’ in 2023, making her return to directing this project one of the most anticipated literary adaptations.
‘The Bell Jar,’ originally published in 1963, tells the story of Esther Greenwood’s descent into mental illness while facing the intense societal expectations of young women in the 1950s. The novel is often viewed as semi-autobiographical, drawing heavily from Plath’s own experiences before her death shortly after its original release.
Joining Eilish in the cast is Carey Mulligan, who is reportedly playing Mrs. Greenwood, Esther’s mother, along with Connor Storrie in the rumored role of Buddy Willard. The film is produced by Joy Gorman Wettels through her Joy Coalition banner, alongside Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment and StudioCanal.
This is not the first attempt to adapt Plath’s novel for the screen. An earlier version was in development with Kirsten Dunst attached to direct and Dakota Fanning set to star, but that project ultimately fell through before production could commence.
For Eilish, this role signifies a major creative shift after years of dominating the music scene as a ten-time Grammy winner and two-time Oscar winner for her original songwriting. She has also been branching into filmmaking, recently co-directing a concert tour documentary with James Cameron.
With ‘The Bell Jar’ aiming for a 2027 release, fans will have to wait a bit longer to see how Eilish’s dramatic debut unfolds on the big screen. Early glimpses suggest she is fully committed to the role.
