Standing ovations at the Venice Film Festival often make headlines, but they don’t always reflect a film’s critical reception once reviews start coming in. This year’s festival has showcased a striking example of that disparity.

Florian Zeller’s psychological thriller ‘Bunker’ premiered on September 8, featuring real-life couple Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem as a married couple facing challenges in their relationship. The film also stars Patrick Schwarzenegger and Paul Dano, adding to a cast with significant awards potential.

The premiere received a remarkable 16-minute standing ovation, one of the most enthusiastic responses at this year’s festival. However, as the review embargo lifted, critics’ reactions painted a different picture, with only 47% of the 15 tracked critics expressing support for the film.

‘Bunker’ follows Miguel, portrayed by Bardem, a successful Spanish architect living in London with his wife Sofia, played by Cruz, and their two daughters. Miguel’s choice to take on a lucrative but ethically questionable project, designing a survivalist bunker for a tech billionaire played by Dano, triggers a gradual disintegration of their 17-year marriage.

As the project unfolds, Sofia begins to question whether their values align, while also growing closer to an American writer played by Schwarzenegger. The film runs for 126 minutes and marks Zeller’s third feature as writer-director, following his acclaimed drama ‘The Father’ and the more divisive ‘The Son.’

Much of the criticism has focused on the film’s execution rather than its ambition. Reviewers have described ‘Bunker’ as uneven and schematic, with some labeling it a disappointment that fails to develop its themes organically through the narrative.

Several critics pointed out that ‘Bunker’ spends much of its runtime revisiting the same themes of class, wealth, and inequality without fully engaging in dramatic action, resulting in a film that seems more interested in theoretical discussions than real tension. This sentiment has been echoed across various reviews, with the film’s Metacritic score currently sitting at a modest 46.

Despite the mixed reviews, one aspect of ‘Bunker’ has garnered consistent acclaim: the performances of Cruz and Bardem. Critics have highlighted the couple’s on-screen chemistry as the film’s strongest element, lending their troubled marriage a level of emotional authenticity that elevates the otherwise familiar material.

This praise is particularly significant given both actors’ Oscar-winning backgrounds, with Cruz winning for ‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’ and Bardem for ‘No Country for Old Men.’ Zeller himself won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for ‘The Father’ in 2021, providing the film with substantial credibility despite the critical challenges.

‘Bunker’ is set to be released in theaters across the United States by Sony Pictures Classics, while Elastica will handle Spanish distribution. Specific release dates for either region have yet to be announced. Given the film’s initial buzz and star-studded cast, distributors will likely monitor audience reactions closely to see if they align more with the enthusiastic Venice crowd or the more critical consensus.

As awards season discussions begin, both Cruz and Bardem have other high-profile projects generating excitement this fall, potentially providing them with stronger opportunities for recognition, even if ‘Bunker’ itself faces challenges in winning over critics.
