Denis Villeneuve has dedicated years to adapting Frank Herbert’s intricate science fiction saga into a visually stunning franchise, and excitement for the final chapter of the trilogy has been mounting for months. With Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides story approaching its climax, fans are eager to experience it ahead of the wide release.

This week, that anticipation peaked when tickets for a special preview screening in the UK went on sale. BFI IMAX announced that its December 15 preview screening would be shown in IMAX 70mm, giving fans the chance to see the film on the largest cinema screen in the country just days before the official December 18 nationwide release.

The demand for these tickets was staggering, with over 100,000 people reportedly joining the virtual queue for ‘Dune: Part Three’ preview tickets at BFI IMAX. This overwhelming traffic caused ticketing systems to crash, reminiscent of the chaos experienced when ‘The Odyssey’ IMAX tickets were released earlier this year.

The BFI IMAX screening is part of a larger nationwide preview rollout across UK cinemas, all set for December 15, just three days before the film’s wider theatrical release, with formats and showtimes varying by location.

Globally, the film’s IMAX 70mm availability is intentionally limited, with only 36 locations worldwide confirmed to offer this format, including 25 theaters in the United States, nine in Canada, one in the United Kingdom, and one in Australia. This scarcity has heightened the rush for tickets, as fans eager to see the film on the largest screen have few opportunities.

‘Dune: Part Three’ continues the saga from ‘Dune: Part Two,’ as Villeneuve wraps up his adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novels, returning to the deserts of Arrakis. The film is based on Herbert’s ‘Dune Messiah,’ bringing Paul Atreides’ journey to a conclusion.

The returning cast features Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Isaach De Bankolé, Charlotte Rampling, and Javier Bardem, reuniting much of the ensemble that made the first two films box office successes. Villeneuve co-wrote the screenplay with Brian K. Vaughan, continuing their collaboration from previous installments.

Villeneuve has established a reputation for crafting his ‘Dune’ films to be experienced in IMAX, which has consistently attracted fans to premium format screenings over standard showings. The runtime for ‘Part Three’ is expected to be around 140 minutes, potentially making it the shortest film in the trilogy, although this has yet to be officially confirmed.

Given the historical sellout rates for IMAX 70mm engagements in this franchise and the evident eagerness of fans for an early glimpse of the trilogy’s finale, it’s not surprising that the ticketing systems struggled under the demand. This rush mirrors similar surges seen throughout the year, highlighting how integral IMAX has become for audiences wanting to experience this story.

With preview screenings confirmed for mid-December and the film’s official release just days later, ‘Dune: Part Three’ is poised to be one of the most eagerly awaited theatrical events of the holiday season. Fans who missed out on this initial ticket rush will likely keep a close watch for more screenings and formats as the December 18 debut approaches.
