Camila Cabello has established herself as a fashion innovator on the gala carpet. Her 2024 Met Gala dress, a custom creation by Ludovic de Saint Sernin, weighed 15 pounds and required 450 hours to craft. Therefore, when she arrived at the Academy Museum Gala, expectations were understandably high.

The 6th annual event took place on Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles. Charlize Theron received the Icon Award, Colman Domingo was honored with the Vantage Award, and John Carpenter received the Luminary Award, while Taylor Swift was set to perform. Rolex sponsored the evening, co-chaired by Robert Rodriguez, Steven Spielberg, and Kate Capshaw.

Cabello did not disappoint with her entrance. She showcased Gothic glamour in a black bodice paired with a draped mesh skirt that unveiled an artwork featuring shimmering gold details underneath. It quickly became one of the most discussed looks of a night filled with prominent figures.

The skirt was a vintage piece from Dolce & Gabbana’s Spring/Summer 1998 collection, styled by Ronnie Hart. This long, slim, sheer-layered skirt featured a washed grey-green hue, adorned with a printed image of the Madonna and Child across the hips and thighs.

On top, she maintained a sharp silhouette. A black satin strapless corset with a sweetheart neckline and visible boning sat just above the waistband. A long black chiffon scarf was loosely tied around her neck, cascading down her back to the floor, functioning like a sheer cape.

Her accessories complemented the theme beautifully. A diamond cross pendant hung from a fine silver chain, accompanied by pear-shaped crystal drop earrings and several chunky rings. The cross harmonized with the religious imagery on the skirt, creating a cohesive outfit.

Below, black Rene Caovilla Erin sandals peeked out from under the hem, keeping the focus on the skirt. Her dark hair was styled in a loose, messy updo, with wispy strands framing her face and a side-swept fringe. This softness contrasted nicely with the structured corset.

Cabello, the Cuban-American singer who gained fame in Fifth Harmony before launching her solo career, has a keen eye for vintage designer pieces. Her previous major fashion moment was a netted gold gown at the Lucas Museum opening, making her shift to moody grey-green and black a notable change. She has long favored black, and this ensemble represents one of her more dramatic interpretations.

She was not the only musician to make a stylish appearance. ROSÉ, Sabrina Carpenter, Janelle Monáe, and Teyana Taylor were among the attendees. Swift arrived in a strapless, pale blue pleated silk Dior gown with a beaded bow, while Carpenter also donned blue, making Cabello’s black corset and draped skirt a striking contrast.

Other notable attendees included Ana de Armas, Joey King, Chloe Grace Moretz, Hannah Waddingham, Emmy Rossum, Kate Hudson, and Mckenna Grace. Often referred to as the Met Gala of the West, this event follows the global fashion weeks, which is why many guests arrive in runway pieces. Cabello, however, opted for a piece from nearly three decades ago, making her look stand out for that very reason.

The gala aims to raise funds for the museum’s exhibitions, public screenings, and educational programs. Last year’s event raised over $12 million. Cabello’s striking appearance contributed to a night where fashion, music, and film history converged on the same carpet.
