Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Set to Rewrite Universal’s Box Office Records
Blockbuster season has brought numerous milestones this year, but few films have ascended the ranks as steadily and surprisingly as Christopher Nolan’s latest epic. What began as an ambitious adaptation of one of literature’s oldest tales has transformed into one of the year’s defining box office success stories.
‘The Odyssey‘ debuted in theaters back in July, carrying immense expectations for both Nolan and Universal’s broader slate. Few could have anticipated just how far the film’s box office journey would ultimately extend.
Now, that journey is poised to reach a truly historic milestone. ‘The Odyssey’ is expected to surpass $1.5 billion at the global box office this coming weekend, overtaking ‘Furious 7’s’ $1.51 billion total to become Universal’s second-highest-grossing film ever.
This remarkable leap places the film in elite company. Only trailing ‘Jurassic World’s’ $1.67 billion unadjusted total, ‘The Odyssey’ now comfortably ranks among the studio’s all-time biggest releases, a stunning outcome for a nearly three-hour, R-rated mythological drama featuring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, and Tom Holland.
This isn’t the first record ‘The Odyssey’ has shattered on its way here. The film crossed the $1 billion mark within roughly three weeks of its July 17 release, driven by strong holds and unusually high demand for premium large-format screenings, including its distinction as the first movie ever filmed entirely in IMAX.
Additionally, it has already become Nolan’s highest-grossing film, surpassing 2012’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and its previous $1.085 billion global total. Furthermore, ‘The Odyssey’ recently overtook ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time worldwide, a truly rare achievement given how seldom R-rated films reach billion-dollar status, let alone maintain such consistency.
The film’s performance in specialty formats has been particularly noteworthy throughout its run. Its 70mm engagements reportedly remained so popular that many locations stayed sold out well into the fall, a rare indication of sustained audience demand for a film several months into its theatrical release.
Beyond North America, ‘The Odyssey’ has continued to expand into new markets, with releases in China and Japan contributing to its international total well exceeding the domestic side. This global rollout has played a significant role in propelling the film past Universal milestones that once seemed reserved for franchise blockbusters rather than director-driven prestige epics.

With $1.5 billion now within reach, attention naturally shifts to how much higher ‘The Odyssey’ can climb before its theatrical run concludes. Surpassing Universal’s second-place position leaves only ‘Jurassic World’ ahead on the studio’s all-time chart, a target that would necessitate an extraordinary final stretch to seriously challenge.
Regardless of what happens next, ‘The Odyssey’ has already established itself as one of the defining box office narratives of the year, demonstrating that ambitious, adult-oriented filmmaking can still attract blockbuster-sized audiences when executed at this level. For Nolan, it’s a career-defining achievement that few could have predicted just a few months ago.
