Cole Hauser And Taylor Sheridan’s Tensions On ‘Dutton Ranch’ Reportedly Escalate Again
The ‘Yellowstone’ universe has established itself through its rugged, larger-than-life personalities both on-screen and off. However, it appears that the intensity of these relationships is becoming just as captivating as the shows themselves, especially with the expansion of spinoffs like ‘Dutton Ranch.’
Cole Hauser, who has become a familiar face in the franchise as Rip Wheeler, has collaborated closely with Taylor Sheridan on various projects over the years. Yet, sources indicate that their professional relationship has experienced notable friction.
Reports suggest that tensions between Hauser and Sheridan have reached a new peak on the set of ‘Dutton Ranch,’ with insiders revealing to the Daily Mail that the two nearly came to blows for a second time. This dynamic has often been described as a clash of personalities, with one source bluntly stating it as “classic California versus Texas,” highlighting Hauser’s laid-back Santa Barbara vibe against Sheridan’s straightforward Texas attitude.
This characterization aligns with how insiders have portrayed their working relationship for some time. One source noted that while Sheridan’s directness can come off as harsh, it stems from his intense focus and talent. In contrast, Hauser brings a more relaxed atmosphere to the set, resulting in what the source described as an “oil and water” pairing.
Hauser has also openly expressed his frustrations. Reflecting on Sheridan’s limited involvement during the first season of ‘Dutton Ranch,’ Hauser previously mentioned to Page Six that “it certainly was a challenge,” addressing the showrunner’s reduced presence during that production period.

This isn’t the first time their relationship has drawn public attention. In 2023, a legal dispute emerged when Sheridan’s Bosque Ranch company challenged Hauser’s Free Rein coffee brand over its logo, although that lawsuit was ultimately dismissed in January 2024 without further comment from either party.
Despite the reported tensions, sources indicate that Hauser remains acutely aware of his professional obligations to Sheridan. An insider revealed that Hauser faced significant challenges before securing his role in the original ‘Yellowstone,’ recognizing that Sheridan played a crucial role in his rise to stardom, which has likely prevented him from pushing back too hard against the showrunner.
This awareness of their power dynamic seems to influence how conflicts are resolved. Sources suggest that Hauser tends to apologize quickly when tensions arise, understanding that Sheridan wields considerable creative control over the franchise that has significantly shaped his career.
Looking ahead, ‘Dutton Ranch’ does not yet have a confirmed premiere date for its second season, though The Hollywood Reporter has previously stated that production is expected to commence in early 2027. Sheridan is also reportedly set to take on a larger, more hands-on role for the upcoming season, which could either alleviate existing tensions or introduce new challenges to their already complicated dynamic.
For a franchise centered on themes of loyalty, legacy, and hard-earned respect, the real-life relationship between its two central figures seems to reflect some of that same tension seen on-screen. Whether Hauser and Sheridan can resolve their differences before filming resumes remains uncertain.
