Curry Barker is currently a standout figure in the horror genre with his latest film, ‘Obsession.’ The story centers on a young man named Bear, portrayed by Michael Johnston, who turns to supernatural means to capture the attention of his friend Nikki, played by Inde Navarrette.

What begins as a simple wish quickly spirals into a darker narrative, with Barker offering a fresh take on the classic cautionary tale of “be careful what you wish for.”

The concept for ‘Obsession’ emerged from an unexpectedly mundane moment. Barker shared that the idea struck him while he was at home with friends who had gathered to watch an episode of ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,’ where he had a minor role. However, an old rerun of ‘The Simpsons’ airing before their episode ended up being the catalyst for his creative breakthrough.

He vividly recalled, saying, “Bart gets a monkey paw and causes a bunch of chaos. I was thinking that I’ve never seen a straight crazy horror where … we’ve seen ‘Be careful what you wish for’ tons of times. But we’ve never seen my version of it. I instantly started thinking about what I could do with that.”

This seemingly simple idea laid the groundwork for ‘Obsession.’ Rather than rehashing the familiar trope in a conventional manner, Barker aimed to elevate it into something more extreme and personal. The “monkey’s paw” motif, where wishes manifest in twisted forms, became the emotional and narrative core of the film.

As the project evolved, Barker transitioned from creating low-budget viral films to collaborating with a full production team. His earlier breakout, ‘Milk & Serial,’ was famously produced for around $800 and gained millions of views on YouTube. This success paved the way for ‘Obsession,’ which received more traditional backing and a significantly larger production setup.

Barker noted that this shift was a significant change for him, particularly in witnessing a complete crew bring his vision to life. He described stepping onto set and recognizing the stark contrast compared to his previous projects. Despite the larger scale, he maintained tight control over the creative direction, ensuring the tone remained true to the initial spark of inspiration.

He emphasized that collaboration became a vital element of this process. He stated, “This movie taught me how to collaborate with more people. I’ve always been scared of letting too many people in because I’m very precious about my vision. But I’ve learned that if you can get your vision and passion across to them, they tend to give it back, and then it becomes a powerhouse of people that are passionate about the same thing.”

While ‘Obsession’ represents a significant leap in scale and visibility, the fundamental idea remains straightforward. It revolves around desire, consequences, and the lengths one might go to when they believe they can control the outcomes of their wishes. This concept, ignited by a random moment while watching ‘The Simpsons,’ ultimately shaped Barker’s entire approach to the film.
