DC’s ‘Dynamic Duo’ New Release Date Set for September 22, 2028
Robin has not had many opportunities to shine in the spotlight. The last time the Boy Wonder took center stage in live action was in 1997’s ‘Batman & Robin,’ while the last animated film featuring him was 2017’s ‘The LEGO Batman Movie.’ ‘Dynamic Duo‘ aims to change that, introducing a fresh twist.
This animated feature explores the early days of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, the two Robins who fought alongside Batman. It uniquely combines puppetry with animation, utilizing miniatures, models, animatronics, and CGI. The film is being produced by Swaybox, a New Orleans studio founded by Arthur Mintz and Theresa Andersson, with Mintz at the helm as director.
The anticipation for this unusual Batman spin-off has now extended a bit longer. As reported by Deadline, Warner Bros. has shifted the release of the DC Studios film from June 30, 2028, to September 22, 2028. This change, which is less than a 90-day delay, was part of a larger schedule adjustment that also postponed ‘Gremlins 3’ by nearly a year.
Warner Bros. has a clear strategy in mind. The studio believes that late September will serve as a suitable back-to-school timeframe for animation, appealing to K-12 students as well as teens and college students. They also see potential in attracting the same audience that enjoyed the Spider-Verse films.
The new release date offers a practical advantage too, as it distances the film from Paramount’s live-action ‘Call of Duty’ movie, which is still set for June 30, 2028. However, the new date does place it against an untitled DreamWorks animated film from Universal.
Some analysts speculate a connection to the impending Warner Bros. and Paramount merger. Nevertheless, Deadline describes the timing of the shift as coincidental and unrelated to the merger.
This delay also provides breathing room for the rest of DC’s Batman lineup. ‘The Batman: Part II’ is scheduled for release on February 18, 2028, and moving ‘Dynamic Duo’ gives that sequel additional space. ‘Clayface’ is set to hit theaters on October 23, while ‘Man of Tomorrow’ follows on July 9, 2027.
The comparison to the Spider-Verse is noteworthy. ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ is slated for June 18, 2027, meaning it will debut over a year before ‘Dynamic Duo.’ ComicBook.com suggests that the combination of iconic characters and a stylized, youthful approach makes the Spider-Verse films a benchmark, though replicating that success will be challenging.
The production is a collaborative effort. Matt Reeves is producing through 6th & Idaho, while DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran are executive producers. Deadline notes that this film marks the first joint project between DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, with both logos featured in the announcement art.
Matthew Aldrich, known for ‘Coco’ and ‘Lightyear,’ penned the script, with Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber later brought in for revisions. The story serves as an origin tale about two best friends pulled in different directions in Gotham City, with Dick aligning with Batman and Jason getting involved with the Red Hood gang.
It’s important to note that this film is separate from the main DC Universe. It operates outside the canon overseen by Gunn and Safran, as well as Reeves’ Robert Pattinson films.
The voice cast has been reported by insider Jeff Sneider, and Deadline’s coverage aligns with this. Mason Thames will voice Dick Grayson, while Logan Kim will voice Jason Todd, with Lee Pace and Steve Buscemi portraying two versions of Red Hood.
As for Batman, the role remains uncast. One report suggests Chris Pine has been offered the part, but nothing has been confirmed, leaving one of the film’s biggest questions unanswered with over a year to go.
For now, DC fans have a new date to mark on their calendars and a fresh reason to be intrigued by one of the studio’s more unconventional projects. With its unique puppetry-meets-animation visuals, a youthful voice cast, and a back-to-school target, ‘Dynamic Duo’ is clearly set to stand out among other Batman offerings.
