Deadpool Creator Claims Marvel Excluded X-Force Characters to Cut Costs
Marvel Studios has unveiled a fresh iteration of X-Force in the second season of ‘X-Men ’97’, but not all fans are pleased with the team’s composition. Rob Liefeld, the comic book creator renowned for co-creating ‘Deadpool’ and the original X-Force, expressed his concerns regarding the absence of several of his characters from the animated series, hinting at potential financial motivations behind the decision.
The conversation ignited when ‘X-Men ’97’ season 2 showcased Cable’s revamped X-Force team. Rather than adhering to the classic comic lineup, the series features Archangel, Psylocke, Sunspot, and Jubilee alongside Cable. Many devoted fans quickly pointed out the omission of several iconic members from the early 1990s comics.
After the changes were revealed, fans sought Liefeld’s thoughts on social media. In response to a fan on X who remarked that the original roster was superior, Liefeld shared his theory on why Marvel Studios opted for a different approach.
“Yes, of course everyone has said that. But it’s their pick. I think it’s because they would be on the hook to me for even more money if they use more of my creations. My deals are expensive.”
His remarks imply that Marvel may have chosen not to include more of his characters to avoid incurring additional costs. However, Liefeld did not provide any concrete evidence to support this theory, and Marvel Studios has yet to respond to his claims.
The original X-Force lineup introduced by Liefeld in the comics looked quite different from what audiences are currently seeing in ‘X-Men ’97’. Alongside Cable, the original team featured characters like Boom-Boom, Cannonball, Shatterstar, Feral, and Warpath. Over the years, the team has evolved, with heroes such as Domino, X-23, and even Deadpool joining at various times.
None of these characters are part of the current animated roster. Instead, the series has crafted a team that aligns better with the narrative it aims to convey in its second season.

The new season centers around Apocalypse as he pursues the X-Men across various timelines. With the main team split, other mutant factions like X-Force and X-Factor are taking on more significant roles than before. This shift has allowed the writers to create a new version of X-Force rather than merely replicating the comic book team.
Liefeld’s comments have ignited discussions among fans, with some agreeing that the original lineup should have been utilized, while others contend that Marvel aimed to tell a different story. Since the studio has not made any public statements, there is no confirmation that licensing fees or creator payments influenced the final character selection.
Liefeld’s creations have previously appeared in Marvel projects. ‘Deadpool’ has become one of Marvel’s most successful movie franchises, while X-Force made a brief appearance in ‘Deadpool 2’ before most of the team was eliminated during their first mission. Despite the enduring popularity of many of his characters among comic readers, Marvel has often taken different creative directions when adapting them for television and film.
According to Liefeld, his theory is merely his own perspective, but it has reignited the debate about the extent of creators’ influence when their comic book characters are adapted for new projects. Whether his absent X-Force heroes will make a return in future episodes remains uncertain, but for now, Marvel’s animated series is progressing with its unique version of the iconic mutant team.
