Disney’s Live-Action ‘Tangled’ Shares New First Look at Rapunzel and Flynn Rider
Disney’s live-action remake initiative continues to thrive, and now ‘Tangled‘ is set to receive its own adaptation. The beloved 2010 animated film, which earned over $591 million globally and inspired a short film and a Disney Channel series, has a cherished legacy that this new version aims to honor.
Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim were cast as Rapunzel and Flynn Rider in January, following a quiet search that began when the project was first announced in early December 2024. Filming has now moved to Spain, where the production is working on intricate sets designed to recreate the enchanting Kingdom of Corona.
Recent set photos have provided fans with their best look yet at the two leads together, showcasing Croft’s Rapunzel and Manheim’s Flynn Rider in costume. The images highlight Rapunzel’s stunning blonde wig adorned with braids and flowers, paired with a deeper purple dress than the one worn by Mandy Moore’s animated version. Meanwhile, Manheim’s Flynn features a mustache and tousled hair that echo the character’s animated charm.
These details indicate a strong commitment from the production team to replicate the beloved visual style of the original 2010 film, while also incorporating subtle live-action adaptations. Previous set photos had given glimpses of Rapunzel’s long braided hair from behind and Manheim navigating the castle corridors, but these latest images are the first to capture both characters together in a scene.
The ‘Tangled’ remake is arriving at a challenging time for Disney’s live-action strategy, following controversies surrounding ‘Snow White’ and the disappointing box office performance of ‘Moana,’ which is projected to lose over $100 million. In light of this, Disney seems to be banking on nostalgia and faithful visual representation to ensure ‘Tangled’ doesn’t face a similar fate.
Michael Gracey, known for directing ‘The Greatest Showman’ and ‘Better Man,’ is at the helm of this project, with a script penned by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. Kristin Burr has recently joined as a producer, and this creative team has a solid track record in large-scale musical productions, which is crucial given the original animated film’s success was heavily reliant on music and visual grandeur.
In addition to the leading duo, the film boasts a notable supporting cast, including Kathryn Hahn as the wicked Mother Gothel and Diego Luna in an undisclosed role. Hahn’s casting has particularly excited fans, especially after it was reported that Scarlett Johansson was initially considered for the role before choosing to star in ‘The Batman Part II’ instead.
As production continues overseas and Disney has yet to unveil an official first-look image or release date, fans will have to rely on these set photos for updates. With Disney’s D23 event approaching next month, it remains to be seen if the studio will finally provide an official reveal.
