Emma D’Arcy & Olivia Cooke Discuss ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Episode 2 Finale
‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Episode 2 concludes with one of the most poignant moments in the series to date. After enduring years of friendship, betrayal, and conflict, Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower meet once more, but this encounter is unlike any before. In comments shared with TheWrap, stars Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke reveal that this final scene signifies a crucial turning point for both characters.
The episode follows Rhaenyra and Daemon as they set their plan in motion to reclaim King’s Landing. Their objective is straightforward: find King Aegon and remove him from power so Rhaenyra can finally ascend to the Iron Throne.
However, things do not unfold as expected. Aegon has already fled, leaving Rhaenyra unaware of his whereabouts. Instead, Daemon stumbles upon Otto Hightower imprisoned in the castle’s dungeons. Otto, a pivotal figure in the ongoing conflict, unexpectedly becomes the last high-ranking member of the Green faction left behind.
Rhaenyra faces the harrowing decision to execute him herself. This moment is anything but triumphant; she is in tears as she carries out the execution before finally taking her place on the Iron Throne.
Shortly after, Alicent is brought into the throne room after being intercepted while attempting to flee the city. She immediately notices her father’s severed head on the floor before locking eyes with Rhaenyra.
In an interview with TheWrap, Emma D’Arcy articulated Rhaenyra’s emotions in that intense moment. “I wanted her to be sort of uncomfortably revealed, actually. I think that’s probably what Alicent’s gaze does. She sees through any of the artifice or armor that Rhaenyra might have built up.”

D’Arcy noted that Rhaenyra can no longer hide behind the facade of a powerful queen. Alicent’s gaze compels her to confront the reality of their tumultuous history. Despite finally sitting on the throne she has fought so hard to claim, Rhaenyra cannot evade the emotional burden of her actions.
For Alicent, the moment is equally devastating. Olivia Cooke shared with TheWrap that her character feels utterly betrayed upon realizing the fate of her father.
“I think she feels incredibly betrayed, and like she was caught up in yet another person’s scheming… it feels like it was all for nothing, and she’s in a worse position than where she started. I don’t know… how that relationship can move on from that, at that point… it’s a huge betrayal.”
Cooke believes that the execution alters everything between the two women. Their complex friendship has weathered years of strife, but witnessing Otto’s death may have irrevocably shattered any hope of reconciliation.
While Rhaenyra has finally attained the Iron Throne, her triumph comes at a significant emotional cost. Rather than celebrating, the new queen is confronted by someone who understands her better than almost anyone else. Alicent’s silent response conveys more than words ever could.
Cooke also hinted that the drama is just beginning. She cautioned viewers that the remainder of Season 3 will escalate in intensity.
“No one’s having a good time, basically, but there’s fantastic new characters and different dynamics with original characters that we see for the first time. It’s huge this season.”
Based on insights from Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke shared with TheWrap, the climactic scene of Episode 2 transcends Rhaenyra’s ascent to the throne. It encapsulates the personal toll of power. The ongoing war has driven both women to unimaginable depths, and following Otto’s death, there may be no turning back for either of them.
