Fans of the Wizarding World have long debated how well the original ‘Harry Potter’ films captured J.K. Rowling’s cherished book series. Even the most ardent supporters of the Warner Bros. franchise recognize that compressing seven expansive novels into eight films meant leaving a significant amount of content behind.

This discussion has gained renewed relevance as HBO’s ambitious television reboot approaches its premiere, promising a format designed to allow the source material much more room to develop. With an entire season dedicated to each book instead of a single film, the series is set to offer a distinctly different adaptation from the outset.

Gary Oldman, who famously portrayed Sirius Black in four of the original films, has shared his thoughts on how this new approach will resonate with fans. In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly at the Toronto International Film Festival, Oldman expressed his belief that the new series will be more appealing to audiences than the films, highlighting the format’s ability to retain much more of the original book details.

Oldman pointed out that the films had to condense the narrative significantly, noting that even after major cuts, they could only manage a runtime of about three hours. He mentioned that the HBO series aims to adhere closely to the source material, planning to present the story almost word-for-word, which he feels will be more gratifying for viewers, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.

He candidly acknowledged the considerable amount of material that was lost to fit the films’ shorter runtime, explaining that much character depth was sacrificed during the editing process, constrained by the typical two-and-a-half-hour format of most Hollywood blockbusters. This issue is particularly personal for Oldman, who has often expressed his frustration over the limited screen time his character received.

Oldman has previously shared his feelings about Sirius Black, a character he deeply loves, not receiving the attention he deserved within the films’ abbreviated structure. Sirius first appeared in 2004’s ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’ but was reduced to mere cameos in ‘Goblet of Fire’ and a brief role in ‘Order of the Phoenix,’ where he ultimately meets his demise.

Despite these frustrations, Oldman has expressed genuine gratitude for his involvement in the franchise. He feels proud to have been part of a cultural phenomenon that he believes is unlikely to be replicated in the same way.

HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ series is set to premiere on Christmas Day 2026, streaming on HBO Max with a completely new young cast taking on the iconic roles. Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout will portray Harry, Hermione, and Ron, respectively, alongside seasoned actors John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore and Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall.

HBO has yet to announce who will portray Sirius Black in the new series, leaving Oldman’s potential return to the franchise uncertain. Given the significant age difference between Oldman and the character’s timeline, it seems improbable that he will reprise the role, although there may still be opportunities for him to appear in other capacities within the expanding universe in the future.

With the series promising to unfold over multiple seasons rather than just a few films, Oldman’s prediction reflects a broader hope among longtime fans that this new adaptation will finally deliver the detailed storytelling that a single trilogy of movies could not accommodate. Whether HBO’s version will fulfill that promise remains to be seen, but the format alone offers a genuine opportunity to succeed where the films had to make compromises.
