Universal Pictures has established its reputation over the years primarily through its reliable franchises, from the ‘Fast & Furious’ series to the highly lucrative ‘Jurassic’ universe. Standalone films rarely contribute to the studio’s biggest commercial successes, making it increasingly challenging for original films to achieve significant box office milestones.

This context makes Christopher Nolan’s mythological epic ‘The Odyssey’ an intriguing case study for the studio. Since its debut this summer, the film has consistently shattered records, defying expectations for how a three-hour, R-rated original film should perform at the domestic box office.

Now, ‘The Odyssey’ is on the verge of reaching a historic milestone. It is set to surpass $600 million domestically this weekend, making it only the second film in Universal’s history to achieve this feat, joining 2015’s ‘Jurassic World’ as the only other film to do so.

‘Jurassic World’ reached this milestone thanks to a massive built-in franchise following, ultimately finishing its domestic run with $652.27 million, a total that remains among the highest-grossing films of all time. This film benefited from decades of brand recognition stemming from the original ‘Jurassic Park,’ creating a level of audience demand that few films can replicate.

In contrast, ‘The Odyssey’ does not have the same advantages. As an original adaptation of Homer’s ancient epic, it lacks prior franchise history, a built-in fanbase, and has an R rating that typically limits a film’s broader commercial appeal. Its journey to $600 million represents a fundamentally different kind of box office achievement compared to ‘Jurassic World’s’ more predictable blockbuster trajectory.

This distinction is particularly significant given the contrasting ways these two films approached their respective milestones. While ‘Jurassic World’ relied on a massive, front-loaded opening weekend typical of franchise films, ‘The Odyssey’ has maintained remarkable consistency week after week, recently setting a record for the longest period any R-rated film has ever achieved $1 million in single-day grosses.

Such staying power indicates a theatrical run driven by repeat viewership and strong word of mouth rather than a single opening weekend surge. Nolan’s film has continued to attract audiences to premium formats like IMAX well into its second month of release, a trend more commonly associated with awards-season slow burns than three-hour mythological blockbusters.

Nolan’s impressive track record has made him an outlier in an industry increasingly dominated by sequels, reboots, and established intellectual properties. His ability to consistently draw large theatrical audiences to original concepts, from ‘Inception’ to ‘Oppenheimer,’ has established him as one of the few filmmakers that studios trust to lead a major release without relying on existing franchise recognition.

‘The Odyssey’ crossing the $600 million mark only strengthens that reputation, placing an original story alongside one of the most consistently profitable franchises in modern Hollywood. For Universal, this achievement serves as evidence that a true box office phenomenon does not necessarily require a built-in fanbase, provided the right filmmaker and theatrical experience are in place.

Whether ‘The Odyssey’ can ultimately match ‘Jurassic World’s’ final domestic total remains to be seen, but simply reaching this elite status already secures the film’s place in Universal’s box office history. Given how rare it is for any original release to achieve this level of longevity, the comparison alone highlights the significance of this run.
