HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series is undergoing a significant casting change as it prepares for its second season.

Young actress Gracie Cochrane, who portrays Ginny Weasley in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, will not be returning for Season 2, according to a statement from Cochrane and her family.

The announcement comes as Season 1 of the series approaches the end of production. Cochrane’s family shared that she has chosen to step away from the role due to unexpected circumstances, emphasizing that her time in the Harry Potter universe was incredibly meaningful.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances Gracie has made the challenging decision to step away from her role as Ginny Weasley in the HBO Harry Potter series after season one,” the family stated. They expressed gratitude for the opportunity, thanking casting director Lucy Bevan and the entire production team, while also noting that Cochrane is eager for future roles and new opportunities.

HBO has also addressed the situation, confirming Cochrane’s departure and expressing support for the young actress. “We support Gracie Cochrane and her family’s decision not to return for the next season of HBO’s Harry Potter series, and we are grateful for her work on season one of the show,” the network stated.

The series, a major adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s beloved books, has recently been renewed for a second season, with production expected to start later this year.

As one of the pivotal characters, Ginny Weasley’s recasting is a significant change for the series as it moves forward. A new actor will need to take on the role when filming for Season 2 begins.

The show is written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, with Mark Mylod serving as executive producer and director on several episodes. It is produced by HBO in collaboration with Brontë Film and TV, Heyday Films, and Warner Bros. Television. The series will air on HBO and stream on HBO Max upon release.
