The horror film Backrooms has evolved from a simple internet concept into one of the most surprising box office hits of 2026. This project began as a viral idea in 2019, when users shared unsettling images of empty, yellow office-like spaces and crafted a creepy narrative about being trapped in endless rooms beyond reality.

The concept quickly gained traction on platforms like 4chan and later YouTube, where creator Kane Parsons transformed it into a short horror series in 2022. Those videos attracted massive attention, amassing nearly 200 million views. What started as a low-budget online “creepypasta” has now blossomed into a full cinematic universe that caught the eye of major studios, including A24.

Kane Parsons, now just 20 years old, directed the film adaptation of Backrooms, making his success even more remarkable in Hollywood history. The movie retains the unsettling premise of the original videos, focusing on a bizarre, endless space filled with identical yellow rooms, constant buzzing lights, and a creeping sense of isolation that escalates into terror.

Upon its release, the film quickly became a worldwide sensation. According to Entertainment Weekly, Backrooms grossed approximately 118 million dollars globally during its opening weekend, with around 81.4 million dollars earned in the United States alone, propelling it to the top of the box office. This performance also marked A24’s largest opening ever, surpassing many of its previous successful films.

The film’s success also set a new record for its director. Kane Parsons is now the youngest filmmaker to direct a movie that reached number one at the box office, breaking the previous record held by Josh Trank, who was 27 when Chronicle topped the charts in 2011.

Industry experts suggest that the film’s success is indicative of a larger trend where internet-born ideas are transforming into major Hollywood projects. The original viral concept, simple yet strange, provided the film with a built-in audience even before its theatrical release, helping it achieve mainstream success.

A24’s involvement in the project was also crucial. The studio, known for its bold horror and drama films, has been broadening its scope in recent years. With Backrooms, it has secured one of its most significant commercial victories, surpassing titles like Hereditary and Uncut Gems in terms of opening performance.

The film’s success illustrates the evolving landscape of modern horror. Instead of originating from traditional studios or literature, stories can now emerge from internet posts, grow through fan communities, and ultimately become major blockbuster films. Backrooms exemplifies this shift, transforming an online urban legend into a global phenomenon.
