‘In the Grey’ Rotten Tomatoes Score Hits 47% as Critics Review Henry Cavill’s Film
Guy Ritchie’s latest action thriller In the Grey has hit theaters and is already causing a stir among critics. Currently, the film holds a 47% rating on the Tomatometer based on 30 reviews, while audience reactions are more favorable, with an 83% score on the Popcornmeter from over 100 verified ratings.
Released in the United States on May 15, 2026, the film is directed, written, and produced by Guy Ritchie, in collaboration with Black Bear Pictures. It features a star-studded cast including Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal, Eiza González, Kristofer Hivju, Fisher Stevens, and Rosamund Pike.
The plot centers around a covert team of elite operatives who navigate the shadows, accustomed to violence and global power struggles. When a dictator absconds with a billion-dollar fortune, the team embarks on a perilous mission to reclaim it. What begins as a heist quickly escalates into a broader conflict filled with betrayal, strategy, and survival.
Critics have expressed sharply divided opinions on the film. While some praised the cast and the film’s energy, others found it dull or overly familiar. William Bibbiani of TheWrap offered a negative review, stating, “It’s a one way ticket to Dullsville. Population: this poor, poor cast.”
Conversely, Thelma Adams of AARP Movies for Grownups rated it 3/5, remarking, “This lethal ensemble thriller is fun without slipping into slapstick… After the first hour of largely stylish set-up, the movie bursts into life in the final half-hour.”
Other critics were less impressed. Eric Goldman of IGN commented, “Filled with never-ending voice over and exposition… In the Grey is a low point for director Guy Ritchie.” Similarly, Johnny Oleksinski of the New York Post criticized the film’s lack of energy, noting, “The leads have some so-so jokes they don’t do much with, and their characters are bland.”

Bilge Ebiri of New York Magazine/Vulture observed that while Ritchie’s visual style remains intact, “his characters feel dead on arrival.” Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter provided a mixed review, suggesting that the film is easy to watch but may suffer from excessive editing.
Despite some negative reviews, a few critics highlighted Eiza González as a standout performance amidst an otherwise uneven ensemble.
With its mixed reception from critics and audiences alike, In the Grey is shaping up to be one of Guy Ritchie’s more controversial recent releases, even as it garners significant viewer interest worldwide.
