‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ Expected to Be August’s Top Box Office Hit in 2026
Horror franchises rarely make it to a sixth installment, especially one that still generates significant box office excitement. Yet, the ‘Insidious’ series is proving it has plenty of life left as it gears up for its latest theatrical release.
Since its inception in 2010 by James Wan and Leigh Whannell with a modest budget of $1.5 million, the franchise has established itself as one of horror’s most reliable earners. Despite some ups and downs at the box office, the latest installment has reignited interest in a way that few anticipated.
Current tracking indicates that this momentum will carry into the next chapter. ‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ is projected to open with a domestic box office between $26 million and $34 million, making it the biggest August release of 2026 and aligning it with the franchise’s best debut in 2023.
This comparison is not coincidental. ‘Insidious: The Red Door,’ the film’s immediate predecessor, opened to $33 million domestically in 2023 and went on to become the highest-grossing film in the franchise, raking in $189 million worldwide. Early pre-sales for ‘Out of the Further’ are reportedly tracking similarly, giving Sony confidence as the release weekend approaches.
Directed by Jacob Chase, who is making his debut in the series, ‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ continues the narrative from ‘The Red Door.’ The film features Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea, and Maisie Richardson-Sellers, with franchise veteran Lin Shaye reprising her role as Elise Rainier, the psychic medium who has been a cornerstone of the series since its beginning.
The film maintains its strong production pedigree, with Jason Blum, James Wan, Leigh Whannell, and Oren Peli on board, the same team that transformed the original ‘Insidious’ into a sleeper hit that grossed over 60 times its small budget. This consistency has helped the franchise avoid the sharp declines that often plague long-running horror series.
The numbers support this trend. ‘Insidious: Chapter 2’ still holds the record for the franchise’s biggest opening weekend at $40.3 million in 2013, while ‘The Last Key’ debuted at $29.5 million in 2018. Even ‘Chapter 3,’ the weakest performer, managed a $22.6 million opening in 2015.
Tracking data from The Quorum, published by Puck, shows ‘Out of the Further’ among the strongest titles ahead of its release, with 47% awareness and 48% interest just over two weeks before its opening. These figures rank second only to Zach Cregger’s upcoming ‘Resident Evil,’ which is set to release in September, and lead all other films debuting in August.
However, there is a notable challenge on the horizon. Despite its strong tracking, ‘Out of the Further’ has reportedly been one of the few high-tracking titles trending slightly downward over the last two tracking cycles, leaving it with one more chart cycle to stabilize before the opening weekend numbers are finalized.
The film also faces a significant competitor at the box office. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has been dominating for weeks, and depending on how well ‘Insidious’ performs, it could either dethrone Tom Holland’s blockbuster or fall just short.
Regardless of the outcome on opening weekend, the tracking numbers indicate that horror fans remain eager for this segment of the genre. With Lin Shaye returning and a new director introducing fresh perspectives to the mythology, ‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ appears set to conclude the summer with one of its strongest performances to date.
