Inde Navarrette’s Rogue Casting in ‘X-Men’ Receives Enthusiastic Response at D23
Casting announcements rarely evoke the kind of intense, in-person reactions that dominate social media for days. However, that’s precisely what transpired this past weekend when Marvel Studios unveiled its revamped ‘X-Men’ lineup to an enthusiastic audience.
The Disney D23 fan event in Anaheim has become a significant platform for major franchise reveals, and this year’s Marvel panel certainly lived up to expectations. President Kevin Feige took the stage to present the mutant team that fans have been eagerly speculating about for months, with the crowd’s excitement escalating with each name announced.
Then came the highlight of the event. Footage circulating online captures the audience’s electrifying response the moment Inde Navarrette was confirmed as the new Rogue, with cheers erupting throughout the venue as her name appeared on the screen.
The impact of this reveal was particularly striking. Navarrette wasn’t the most rumored candidate for the role leading up to the weekend, making her casting one of the genuine surprises of the night and catching many longtime ‘X-Men’ fans off guard.
Just a few months ago, Navarrette was primarily recognized for her supporting role on The CW’s now-canceled ‘Superman & Lois,’ where she portrayed Sarah Cushing throughout all four seasons. Her career took a dramatic turn after she starred in ‘Obsession,’ Curry Barker’s breakout horror film that became one of the year’s biggest box office surprises, grossing over $400 million worldwide from a budget of approximately $750,000.
This performance earned Navarrette a Critics’ Choice Award for Best Actress in a Horror Movie and positioned her firmly on Hollywood’s radar. Interestingly, she had previously expressed a desire to play a different ‘X-Men’ character, revealing to reporters weeks before the announcement that she hoped to secure the role of Mystique after meeting with director Jake Schreier.
Instead, Marvel has entrusted her with one of the franchise’s most iconic characters. Rogue, the Southern mutant with the ability to absorb others’ powers and memories through touch, has been a fan favorite since her early comic book appearances and has held significant importance in live-action adaptations.
Navarrette is the first actor to portray Rogue in live action since Anna Paquin, whose interpretation of the character was central to Fox’s original ‘X-Men’ trilogy in the 2000s, helping to introduce mainstream audiences to the mutant universe. This legacy is substantial, especially considering more than a decade has passed since the character last appeared on screen.
The reveal was part of a larger ensemble announcement. Navarrette joins a talented cast that includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, and Maya Boyd as Storm, with Adam Driver confirmed to play the villainous Mister Sinister.
Even those connected to Rogue’s history have commented on the announcement. Lenore Zann, who has voiced the character across three decades of animated projects, including the original 1992 series and ‘X-Men ’97,’ shared a warm welcome message to Navarrette shortly after the reveal, symbolizing a handoff between eras of the character.
Marvel’s rebooted ‘X-Men,’ directed by Jake Schreier, is set to hit theaters on May 5, 2028. With filming expected to commence next year and a cast already generating this level of excitement before a single frame has been shot, anticipation for the film shows no signs of waning anytime soon.
