James Franco is making his return to a significant Hollywood franchise with a role in the upcoming ‘John Rambo’ prequel. This exciting news was first reported by Variety, revealing that Franco will portray a minor villain in the film.

Currently in post-production after filming wrapped in Thailand, the project is directed by Jalmari Helander, known for ‘Sisu.’ This film serves as an origin story, set before the events of the 1982 classic ‘First Blood,’ which introduced audiences to Sylvester Stallone’s iconic character, Rambo.

According to Variety, Franco joins a talented cast that features Noah Centineo as a younger Rambo and David Harbour as Major Trautman, Rambo’s commanding officer. The film aims to explore the early history of the character before he became the legendary lone warrior known from the original franchise.

Additional cast members include Yao, Jason Tobin, Quincy Isaiah, Jefferson White, and Tayme Thapthimthong. Produced by Lionsgate, Millennium Media, Templeton Media, and AGBO, the film will be distributed by Lionsgate.

Franco’s casting comes at a time when he has been re-emerging in public, including appearances at the Cannes Film Festival. He was spotted attending the opening ceremony with his partner Izabel Pakzad and participated in various festival events, such as a Chopard dinner and the ‘Club Kid’ party.

During Cannes, Franco spoke with Deadline, indicating that he recently completed work on another unnamed major studio film. He mentioned, “it won’t be ready for this summer, but my guess is it will be end of this year or spring-summer 2027.” He also shared his focus on rebuilding his personal life, striving to live a “positive life” following past controversies.

Franco faced accusations of sexual misconduct and inappropriate behavior at his acting school. While he denied some allegations, he acknowledged the concerns raised by multiple accusers.

The screenplay for ‘John Rambo’ is penned by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani. The production team includes Kevin King Templeton, Les Weldon, Jonathan Yunger, Angela Russo-Otstot, and Michael Disco, with executive producers Anthony and Joe Russo and Sylvester Stallone.

This film is set to delve into the early mythology of Rambo, illustrating how the character became involved in military operations prior to the events of the original movie.

With production completed and the cast assembled, the project is now progressing through post-production ahead of its anticipated release.
