James Gunn Confirms No Back-to-Back Filming for ‘Batman 2’ and ‘Batman 3’
For months, speculation has circulated on social media regarding how Warner Bros. and director Matt Reeves might expedite the notoriously delayed ‘Batman’ franchise into production overdrive.
Fans have theorized that massive blockbuster sequels could be filmed simultaneously to justify the extended gap between projects and deliver the highly anticipated third film sooner. The excitement surrounding ‘The Batman: Part II’ has reached a peak, especially with the recent release date delay pushing the film to February 18, 2028—nearly six years after the original 2022 release.
The speculation about back-to-back filming intensified when Bill Ramey, a credible longtime personality covering the Batman franchise, shared a redesigned logo for ‘The Batman II’ that prominently featured a Roman numeral III. This seemingly intentional design choice sparked immediate fan theories that the third installment was already in active development alongside Part II, leading many to assume that both films were being shot in one massive production.
However, DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has firmly put an end to the rumor. When asked on Threads to confirm or deny whether the two Batman sequels are filming simultaneously, Gunn responded bluntly: “I can deny.” This straightforward denial has left many fans disappointed, as the prospect of back-to-back filming would have suggested they might see the third Batman film on the horizon much sooner than expected.

While this production approach is not unusual in Hollywood, it’s understandable why fans hoped for such a strategy. ‘The Matrix Reloaded’ and ‘The Matrix Revolutions’ were famously shot back-to-back following the massive success of ‘The Matrix.’ The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise employed the same method with ‘Dead Man’s Chest’ and ‘At World’s End’ after the blockbuster reception of ‘The Curse of the Black Pearl.’ Marvel Studios also shot ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ simultaneously, delivering two massive superhero films within a relatively short timeframe.
‘The Batman: Part II’ has faced numerous delays since its inception. Originally scheduled for October 2, 2026, Warner Bros. pushed the release to October 1, 2027. That date was later shifted again, with the studio announcing the new February 2028 release window to allow director Matt Reeves additional time for post-production work and refinement. These repeated delays have tested the patience of devoted fans eagerly awaiting Robert Pattinson’s return as the Dark Knight.

The sequel features an impressive ensemble cast joining Pattinson in the Gotham City universe. Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry, and Sebastian Koch have all joined the production in roles that the studio continues to keep tightly under wraps. Reeves co-wrote the screenplay alongside Mattson Tomlin, and the film is currently in active production in London.
The decision to focus on ‘The Batman: Part II’ as a singular project rather than splitting creative energy between two films simultaneously suggests a different strategic approach. Rather than attempting to deliver two massive comic book adaptations in quick succession, Reeves is concentrating all of his attention and vision into ensuring Part II is as strong and complete as possible. This method minimizes the risk of spreading the director too thin across competing visual effects, editing schedules, and creative decisions for two simultaneous productions.
Gunn’s confirmation that ‘The Batman: Part III’ will not be shot back-to-back with Part II means the third installment remains firmly in the future. The DC Studios boss is juggling multiple projects across his expanding cinematic universe, and the timeline for another Batman sequel won’t accelerate simply to satisfy fan eagerness. Part II’s February 2028 arrival will mark the first step toward closure on this long chapter of anticipation.
