Marvel’s most ambitious crossover event is set to focus on legacy alongside its spectacular action, uniting heroes who have never appeared together before against a genuinely existential threat. The return of the original ‘X-Men’ cast carries significant nostalgic weight, with James Marsden’s Cyclops playing a pivotal role in this reunion.

Marsden first portrayed Scott Summers in 2000’s ‘X-Men,’ reprising his role in ‘X2’ and ‘X-Men: The Last Stand,’ and making a brief appearance in ‘Days of Future Past.’ Now, over twenty years later, he is returning as Cyclops for ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ joining fellow franchise icons Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen as Professor X and Magneto, marking the X-Men’s first significant appearance in an ‘Avengers’ film.

This reunion comes with a long-awaited visual transformation. Marsden has revealed that Cyclops will don a costume inspired by his original comic book design, moving away from the tight black leather suits of the earlier films. He has expressed that this new look feels much more comfortable and true to the character compared to what he wore during the first film alongside Hugh Jackman near the Statue of Liberty.

Beyond the costume update, Marsden has described the film’s premise as a monumental convergence of three massive universes facing a serious existential threat. This aligns with Marvel’s official synopsis, which indicates that heroes from three distinct universes will be forced into a deadly clash as the Multiverse Saga approaches its climax.

The three universes involved appear to be the mainline MCU timeline, the Fantastic Four’s universe introduced in this year’s ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps,’ and the X-Men’s own separate reality finally merging with the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe. Trailers have hinted at a devastated X-Mansion, a reunited Xavier and Magneto, and Sentinels activated under Doctor Doom’s control, suggesting that the mutant storyline will have significant stakes as the crossover unfolds.

Marsden’s comments about the costume reflect a broader evolution for the returning X-Men cast, all of whom will wear designs that reflect decades of comic book history rather than merely replicating what audiences saw in the early 2000s. Alongside Stewart, McKellen, and Marsden, the returning legacy roster includes Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, and Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, providing the film with a rich ensemble of franchise veterans.

This is anticipated to be Marsden’s final appearance as Cyclops, as Marvel Studios is reportedly planning to recast the X-Men for their eventual standalone debut within the MCU following ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’ This makes his return in ‘Doomsday’ feel less like a soft reboot and more like a fitting farewell for a character whose comic-accurate look has been years in the making.

With Anthony and Joe Russo at the helm and a reported runtime of 165 minutes, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is shaping up to be the culmination of over a decade of world-building, both within the MCU and across the franchises acquired by Disney through its purchase of 21st Century Fox. Whether the collision Marsden describes will meet such grand expectations remains to be seen when the film premieres.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to hit theaters on December 18.
