‘Jennifer’s Body’ Sequel Is Imminent with a More Sympathetic Jennifer
Some horror films are often misunderstood at their release but later gain appreciation, and few exemplify this better than ‘Jennifer’s Body’. Initially flopping in 2009 with a box office of $31.6 million against a $16 million budget, it has since been rediscovered by fans who recognized its deeper themes beyond the marketing. Now, the long-anticipated sequel is finally gaining real traction.
Directed by Karyn Kusama and penned by Diablo Cody, the original featured Megan Fox as the possessed cheerleader Jennifer Check and Amanda Seyfried as her best friend, Needy. The film’s marketing heavily focused on Fox’s image as a sex symbol, which likely contributed to its initial reception. Over time, however, it has become a cult classic, particularly celebrated for its portrayal of female friendship and sexuality.
This resurgence has sparked ongoing discussions about a sequel, and this week, Cody provided the most definitive update yet. On the Petticoat Revolution podcast, she revealed that the sequel is happening “imminently.” Cody has completed the script, which she says will delve deeper into what makes Jennifer a sympathetic character.
While Cody was cautious about revealing too much, she emphasized her focus on exploring Jennifer’s loneliness and the poignant aspects of her character that often go unnoticed. She noted that while many remember Jennifer at her most powerful, they tend to overlook her moments of vulnerability.
Cody highlighted Jennifer’s isolation and insecurity, both before and after her transformation. She pointed out that the film showcases a side of Jennifer that is often forgotten, offering a fresh perspective for a franchise that could have easily opted for more gore.

Cody also praised Fox for her performance, noting how she effectively portrayed both the confident predator and the vulnerable girl beneath. This acknowledgment is significant as the sequel aims to emphasize the quieter, more sensitive aspects of Jennifer’s character.
Cody’s comments suggest that Fox will continue to play a central role in the project. Seyfried expressed last year on Variety’s ‘Actors on Actors’ series that she wouldn’t participate in the sequel without Fox, raising expectations for both actresses’ return.
The journey to this point has been lengthy. Dread Central reported in March that Cody was writing a sequel, and later confirmed that Fox and Kusama would be back. Although a planned October shoot was mentioned, Cody’s latest update did not specify a filming date.
Earlier this year, a Production Weekly listing indicated that filming was set for October, with Fox and Seyfried attached to star and Kusama directing. Kusama confirmed in October 2025 that Cody was working on the script, marking her return to directing after several years focused on television projects like ‘Yellowjackets’.
Despite the progress, some details remain unofficial. The sequel is reportedly in development at 20th Century Fox, but no formal studio announcement has been made, and a release date is yet to be determined. Plot details are being kept under wraps, which is crucial given the original film’s conclusion.
This secrecy adds to the intrigue. The first film ended in a way that seemed to conclude Jennifer’s arc, while Needy emerged from the experience profoundly changed. How the sequel will resurrect Jennifer and whether Seyfried will reprise her role as Needy remain the biggest unanswered questions.
Fans have been waiting for years, and the timing appears to be right. The horror genre in 2026 is experiencing a resurgence, and the demand for female-led stories is stronger than it was at the original’s release. A sequel that treats Jennifer with empathy rather than as a mere punchline could finally offer the character the reappraisal she deserves.
This also presents Cody with an opportunity to revisit her work with the benefit of hindsight. She has previously expressed how much the film’s cult following means to her, and a sequel would honor that legacy. If the script lives up to her vision, it could serve as both a character study and a monster movie.
For now, the most encouraging news is straightforward: the script is complete, the key creatives seem aligned, and the original creator of Jennifer confirms that the wait is nearly over.
