Jeremy Renner’s ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ Is Coming to Netflix on October 5
Streaming exclusivity has often kept some of the most celebrated dramas locked to specific platforms, compelling fans to juggle multiple subscriptions to keep up with their favorite shows. This has particularly been the case with Taylor Sheridan’s expanding television empire, which has largely remained within the Paramount family of services since its inception.
This includes popular titles like ‘Yellowstone’, ‘1883’, ‘1923’, ‘Tulsa King’, and ‘Special Ops: Lioness’, all of which have been firmly rooted within Paramount+ or its cable affiliates. For years, fans without access to that ecosystem had no legal means to delve into Sheridan’s gritty, morally complex world of ranchers, gangsters, and lawmen.
That exclusivity is now coming to an end. Jeremy Renner’s crime drama ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ is set to debut on Netflix, marking the first time any Taylor Sheridan series will stream outside the Paramount umbrella, with multiple seasons expected to launch on October 5.
The series follows Mike McLusky, portrayed by Renner, who takes on the unofficial role of “mayor” in the fictional Michigan town of Kingstown following his brother’s death. McLusky navigates a precarious balance between incarcerated gang leaders, law enforcement, local politicians, and everyday residents, all within a community whose economy is heavily reliant on its prison system.
Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos confirmed this development during a recent earnings call, describing it as part of a broader licensing initiative. “We have a new slate of licensed titles from Paramount which is going to bring a lot of new series, shows that Netflix has never had around the world,” Sarandos noted, adding that the company intends to further expand its licensed programming throughout the year.
While it’s still uncertain how many of the show’s existing four seasons will be available on Netflix, early reports indicate that all 40 episodes could be released simultaneously, providing new viewers with a substantial binge opportunity just as the series approaches its conclusion. ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ has been confirmed to wrap up with an upcoming fifth season, a decision made without the original seven-season plan from series co-creator Hugh Dillon.

The fifth and final season is currently in production, with filming taking place in Pittsburgh since March. New episodes will introduce FBI agent Russell Hardy, played by David Morse, who arrives in Kingstown to investigate the murder of Mike’s sister-in-law, Tracy McLusky, alongside returning cast members, including Emmy and Golden Globe winner Edie Falco as prison warden Nina Hobbs.
The timing of the show’s Netflix debut coincides with significant changes in Sheridan’s career, following a new overall deal he signed with NBCUniversal that will gradually shift him away from Paramount as his current contract concludes at the end of 2028. In addition to ‘Mayor of Kingstown’, Netflix has also acquired the rights to other Paramount+ titles like ‘SEAL Team’ and ‘Watson’ as part of this expanding licensing agreement.
For dedicated fans who have followed McLusky’s increasingly dark journey through Kingstown’s underworld, the Netflix move presents an opportunity to introduce the show to a vast new audience just as its narrative nears its conclusion. Whether this exposure will lead to a wider appreciation for what is often regarded as one of Sheridan’s most underrated series remains to be seen, but the timing certainly feels right.
