Kane Parsons’ ‘Backrooms’ Set to Break A24’s 13-Year Box Office Record
Kane Parsons’ ‘Backrooms’ is on the brink of making history for A24. According to box office figures reported by Deadline, the horror film is anticipated to become the studio’s highest-grossing movie ever worldwide, surpassing the current record holder, ‘Marty Supreme.’
This achievement would signify a significant milestone for A24, which was established in 2012. If ‘Backrooms’ claims the top spot this weekend or by Monday, it will break a box office record that has stood for the entire 13-year history of the company.
The film has already enjoyed an impressive run since its release. Deadline reports that ‘Backrooms’ is expected to finish Sunday with over $185 million worldwide. This total positions it within striking distance of overtaking ‘Marty Supreme,’ which earned $191.2 million globally during its theatrical run.
What makes this performance even more remarkable is the speed at which it has occurred. ‘Backrooms’ is projected to become A24’s biggest movie in just 10 or 11 days in theaters. In contrast, ‘Marty Supreme’ required 53 days to achieve the title of the studio’s highest-grossing film, taking the record from ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once,’ which concluded with $147.9 million worldwide.
The film continues to attract large audiences despite a notable drop in its second weekend. According to Deadline, ‘Backrooms’ is expected to earn around $25.7 million in North America during its second frame, reflecting a decline of about 68% from its opening weekend. Industry analysts note that this trend is typical for films based on popular online properties, as many fans rush to see them upon release.

Even with this decline, the movie’s domestic total is expected to reach $134.8 million by Sunday. Internationally, the film had already amassed $50.3 million as of Friday, further propelling its worldwide total closer to the all-time A24 record.
Deadline also reported that 81% of the film’s second-weekend audience was under the age of 35. This indicates that the movie continues to draw in younger viewers, many of whom were already familiar with the ‘Backrooms’ phenomenon prior to its theatrical release.
The film is based on the viral internet horror series created by Kane Parsons, who first gained recognition online for his ‘Backrooms’ videos. The feature film stars Oscar nominees Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve. It was produced by A24 in collaboration with Chernin Entertainment, Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, 21 Laps, and Phobos.
Another factor contributing to the film’s success is its relatively modest budget. According to Deadline, ‘Backrooms’ cost less than $10 million to produce. Its marketing expenditure in North America was reportedly in the teen millions, making its box office performance even more impressive.
The film’s success has also garnered praise from some of Hollywood’s biggest names. Steven Spielberg recently commented on the strong box office performances of both ‘Backrooms’ and ‘Obsession,’ stating, “I just applaud them.”
With ticket sales still rolling in, ‘Backrooms’ is now just days away from becoming the biggest box office hit in A24 history. If current projections hold, Kane Parsons’ film will officially break a record that has stood since the company was founded 13 years ago.
