Mark Ruffalo has established himself as one of Hollywood’s most vocal political advocates, leveraging his extensive social media presence to comment on various issues, from labor rights to foreign policy. Recently, this activism has embroiled him in a contentious public dispute linked to a potential multibillion-dollar media merger and accusations that have polarized some of his closest colleagues.

The controversy began with an Instagram post on August 21, where Ruffalo connected the proposed merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. He highlighted the ties of Paramount CEO David Ellison, son of Oracle founder Larry Ellison, to the Israeli military efforts, labeling the situation as “genocide” and describing it as an “apartheid system of oppression powered by Oracle.” In response, Paramount expressed concern over what it deemed antisemitic tropes in the discussion, a sentiment echoed by organizations like the Simon Wiesenthal Center and Creative Community for Peace.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Kenneth Lonergan, a longtime friend of Ruffalo and collaborator on ‘You Can Count on Me’, has now entered the fray. In a letter addressing the antisemitism allegations, Lonergan firmly rejected the characterization while clarifying that he does not completely align with Ruffalo’s views on the broader conflict.

Lonergan stated, “The notion that he is antisemitic is overtly preposterous, and the accusation itself a cynical and disgusting lie,” as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. He emphasized that while he profoundly disagrees with many of Ruffalo’s specific views regarding the Middle East, he stands firmly behind his friend’s character.

This letter comes amid a week of escalating public statements from various parties. An industry group known as The Brigade, representing nearly a thousand members and allies from the Jewish community in entertainment, issued an open letter accusing Ruffalo of invoking antisemitic tropes, signed by notable producers such as Haim Saban, Lawrence Bender, and Teddy Schwarzman. Ruffalo has vehemently denied these claims, describing them as “appalling and fundamentally dishonest” and asserting that criticizing Israeli government policies or specific military contracts does not equate to hostility toward Jewish individuals.

The actor has garnered support from other industry figures, including ‘Hacks’ star Hannah Einbinder and Jane Fonda, both of whom have publicly defended him against the antisemitism allegations. What distinguishes Lonergan’s letter from other defenses is his clear disagreement with much of Ruffalo’s political stance, framing his support as a matter of character and intent rather than shared ideology regarding the Israel-Gaza conflict.

The ongoing dispute is set against the backdrop of the still-pending Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger, which is currently on hold as a federal judge reviews a lawsuit from a coalition of state attorneys general challenging the deal on antitrust grounds. Ruffalo has argued that the merger could harm the film industry, citing potential job losses and diminished competition, a separate line of criticism that has become increasingly intertwined with the antisemitism controversy as the situation has evolved.

With representatives for Lonergan, Ruffalo, and Paramount all opting not to provide further comments beyond their existing statements, it remains uncertain whether the dispute will subside or continue to draw in more voices from across Hollywood.
