Fast food collaborations often come and go, but occasionally one emerges with a concept so unexpected that it captures the internet’s attention. This month, two of animation’s most iconic franchises, one rooted in underwater antics and the other in grand maritime adventures, have teamed up for a McDonald’s promotion that took everyone by surprise.

The crossover was officially announced by ‘One Piece‘ on August 13, revealing that Nickelodeon’s ‘SpongeBob SquarePants‘ would join forces with Eiichiro Oda’s beloved manga and anime for a Happy Meal collaboration rolling out in over 70 countries and territories throughout August. The campaign spans regions such as the United States, Canada, Brazil, France, Germany, South Korea, and Australia, with one notable exception: Japan, where the promotion is not available.

McDonald’s has now dropped a new commercial for this collaboration that fully embraces anime homage rather than merely pairing mascots. The latest video features SpongeBob and his Bikini Bottom friends recreating not only a classic ‘One Piece’ opening sequence but also specific, fan-favorite moments from the series, including Zoro’s iconic “nothing happened” scene from the Thriller Bark Arc, where he silently takes on Luffy’s pain after the battle with Moria and Kuma.

This level of detail has become a defining feature of the campaign’s marketing. An earlier commercial, described as taken from the “SpongeBob Archive 2,” begins with Luffy spotting a coveted Happy Meal box before the Straw Hat pirates and the Bikini Bottom crew collide in an anime-style crash sequence, complete with dramatic impact frames, as SpongeBob and his friends emerge dressed as the Straw Hat crew.

The complete Happy Meal lineup features 12 collectible toys, each pairing a SpongeBob character with a corresponding One Piece counterpart. SpongeBob takes on the role of Monkey D. Luffy, Patrick Star becomes Roronoa Zoro, Squidward is reimagined as Sanji, and Mr. Krabs steps into Jinbe’s shoes, among several other combinations rounding out the collection. A thirteenth figure, pairing Smitty Werbenjägermanjensen with Brook, is notably absent from the commercial despite being part of the toy lineup.

Fan reactions to the campaign have been overwhelmingly positive since the first footage surfaced, with social media users praising the ambitious concept. Comments have ranged from calling it “peak crossover chaos” to joking that the collaboration is “a direct attack on millennials with disposable income,” highlighting how the promotion resonates with audiences beyond just kids collecting toys.

This isn’t McDonald’s first successful venture into anime partnerships, as previous collaborations have similarly appealed to adult fans alongside younger customers. Given the staggered rollout of the campaign, with promotions launching region by region rather than all at once, fans in different countries can expect varying local promotions and toy availability throughout the month.

With its deep-cut anime references and the sheer novelty of seeing SpongeBob dressed as Luffy, this crossover has transformed a typical Happy Meal promotion into a genuine viral sensation.
