‘Lanterns’ Episode 4 Recap and Ending Explained: The Identity of the Manhunter Revealed
HBO’s ‘Lanterns’ has spent its initial half-season crafting an atmosphere that feels more like a prestige crime drama than a typical superhero showcase. This deliberate pacing has become the series’ hallmark, positioning it as DC’s answer to a “True Detective”-style mystery, with the central enigma revolving around the true identity of the villainous Manhunter. While this slow burn has tested some viewers, it ultimately set the stage for an explosive fourth episode that delivers on its buildup.
Set in the peculiar, alien-infested town of Rushville, Nebraska, the narrative follows rancher William Macon as he commands his men to eliminate aliens appearing in the area, all while claiming he simply wants to protect his planet from invaders, despite clearly responding to a shadowy benefactor. Hal Jordan, portrayed by Kyle Chandler, and John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, have been circling this benefactor, convinced that Macon’s compound holds the key to uncovering the true nature of the Manhunter.
The search culminates in a shocking revelation. Poorna Jagannathan’s Zoe Macon is unveiled as the Manhunter in the climactic moments of episode 4, a twist that dramatically alters the narrative’s perception of the real threat in Rushville. This revelation follows Hal and John’s daring break-in at Macon’s compound, utilizing a massive drill crafted from John’s Green Lantern ring to unearth critical clues.
This twist reframes Zoe’s earlier presumed death as a clever misdirection. If John, Hal, and the alien Antaan believed Zoe was dead, they would never suspect her as the Manhunter, even with another man named Hector expected to take the fall. John’s personal connection to Zoe seems to be the reason he hasn’t reported her to Antaan and his group of disgruntled aliens, despite his suspicions, hinting that he may believe Antaan is concealing something more sinister.
The stakes escalate rapidly. Hal and John discover they have just one day to locate the Manhunter before the aliens in Nebraska detonate a bomb capable of annihilating the entire city, underscoring the urgency of eliminating the shape-shifter. This ticking clock now looms over the latter half of the season.

Sheriff Kerry Kane, played by Kelly Macdonald, continues to prove invaluable in keeping both Lanterns alive. Just before Macon could inflict harm on them, Kane intervened under the guise of a trespassing charge, effectively saving their lives. Later, she informs them at their motel that she is close to accessing Macon’s files to reveal the identity of the benefactor.
Beyond the Manhunter mystery, episode 4 signifies a quieter turning point for John Stewart. Directed by Stephen Williams and penned by Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson, the episode’s title reportedly references a Walt Disney design term that John explains on-screen, describing a landmark meant to attract attention and organize the surroundings. Given a directive from the Guardians, John chooses not to comply, a decision that carries significant weight, arguably more so than the Manhunter twist itself, as the show subtly avoids drawing attention to it.
However, not every fan is fully on board yet. One review noted that halfway through the season, the show still hasn’t provided viewers with enough reasons to invest, even if ‘Lanterns’ isn’t outright bad and featured several genuinely enjoyable moments in episode 4. Nevertheless, a heartfelt moment resonated with longtime fans as John and Hal shared a quiet conversation in the car afterward, with John half-apologizing for his previous remarks and admitting he would have returned the ring.
With Zoe’s true identity exposed and a countdown underway, ‘Lanterns’ has finally cornered its two leads. Whether Hal and John will pursue Zoe together or turn against each other over their next move is shaping up to be the driving question for the remainder of season 1.
