‘The Walking Dead: Dead City‘ has dedicated much of its third season to a task that the original series often overlooked: the gradual rebuilding of a community amidst the ruins of Manhattan. This slower, more thoughtful approach has characterized the latest episodes of the AMC spinoff, allowing Maggie and Negan the space to explore the kind of individuals they wish to become once the immediate dangers have passed.

In Episode 7, titled “Hourglass,” the story picks up right where the previous episode left off, with Negan facing grave accusations following a shocking closing scene that implied he had harmed the quirky bartender Dillard. Although Maggie is informed that Negan is to blame for the injury, she chooses to seek the truth before jumping to conclusions, despite Renata’s insistence on Negan’s guilt.

Maggie’s instincts prove correct. The episode reveals that Negan did not injure Dillard; instead, Dillard inflicted the wound on himself and falsely accused Negan as revenge for the deaths of his two walker companions—one accidental and one intentional. This twist redefines a character who had primarily served as comic relief into a significant threat.

Dillard’s scheme goes beyond merely framing Negan. He persuades Renata to assist him in tracking down Negan, but when she refuses to kill him and insists on adhering to the community’s rules, Dillard resorts to violence, shooting her instead of accepting her decision. Her death underscores that eliminating Negan was never Dillard’s true objective.

As the credits roll on “Hourglass,” Dillard has transformed a group known as the Dozen into his own personal militia and taken control of the nascent Manhattan community, leaving Maggie, Negan, and Hershel on the outside as the season races toward its conclusion. What began as a manhunt for one individual has spiraled into a far more destabilizing situation for everyone still standing.

The episode was penned by Seth Hoffman and directed by Sylvain White, marking their second contributions to this season. Hoffman took over as showrunner for season 3, succeeding Eli Jorné, who led the first two seasons of the spinoff based on Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard’s original ‘The Walking Dead.’

For Jimmi Simpson, portraying a character with an uncertain fate heading into the finale brought a unique sense of closure. Simpson described Dillard’s ending as irreplaceable, noting that it made complete sense after witnessing how thoughtfully the writers crafted the arc, speaking with MEAWW about the transformation.

However, not everyone agrees that the twist was effective. One review suggested that the sudden shift to Dillard as the season’s main antagonist felt less like clever misdirection and more like a poorly set-up development that caught viewers off guard simply because it was never deemed worth considering.

Others have viewed the reveal more favorably, highlighting that Jimmi Simpson’s portrayal makes Dillard’s transformation genuinely unsettling, while Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan continue to provide emotional depth as Maggie grapples with how much trust she can place in Negan.

With Dillard now holding the community hostage and Renata gone, Maggie and Negan enter the season finale with significantly fewer allies than they had just an hour earlier, facing a far more personal battle than either anticipated.
