HBO’s ‘Lanterns‘ has centered its first half-season around a pivotal question, and this build-up has made the series one of the most discussed entries in the DC Universe since its debut. In the first four episodes, Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart have been on a quest for an answer that has remained elusive.

That answer finally came in episode 4, delivering a revelation that significantly alters viewers’ understanding of the show’s central mystery. The actress at the heart of this twist is now sharing insights about what this reveal means for her character moving forward.

Poorna Jagannathan’s Zoe Macon was unveiled as the Manhunter hiding in Rushville, Nebraska, a discovery that recontextualizes nearly every scene she has appeared in since the season began. Jagannathan explains that this reveal not only shifted the plot but also fundamentally changed who Zoe is as a character.

Jagannathan has been open about her own surprise regarding the twist. In an interview with EW, she confessed that she was unaware of her character’s identity as a Manhunter until she read the script, stating that no one from the production had informed her beforehand, leaving her just as shocked as the audience, as she had assumed the character would be a man.

This unexpected twist has influenced how she approached her portrayal of Zoe once she learned the truth. Jagannathan describes the Manhunter as more of a victim than a villain, shaped by circumstances and programming rather than malicious intent, adding depth to a character who initially appeared to be merely a small-town love interest.

She has also discussed how this twist aligns with the show’s broader goals. Jagannathan appreciates how ‘Lanterns’ subverts its genre, using the reveal to challenge preconceived notions about who can be perceived as dangerous and who is often dismissed as harmless.

The reveal also reframes Zoe’s apparent death earlier in episode 4, where she seemed to be killed in a satellite strike. If those pursuing the Manhunter believed Zoe was already dead, they would not have suspected her, indicating that her survival was less about luck and more about a strategic escape.

John’s reaction to the revelation adds another layer to the unfolding drama. He appears to have suspected Zoe’s true identity for some time without revealing it, a choice that deepens the growing divide between him and Hal and raises new questions about his trust as the season progresses.

Garret Dillahunt, who portrays William Macon, has also commented on how the reveal alters the dynamics in Rushville, highlighting the existing tension in scenes involving his character even before the Manhunter twist was revealed. That tension escalates once Zoe’s true nature becomes known to the other characters.

With four episodes remaining, ‘Lanterns’ must now navigate a Manhunter who is not a faceless threat but a character the audience has come to know. Jagannathan’s remarks suggest that the show is embracing this complexity rather than avoiding it, treating Zoe’s reveal as a foundation for deeper inquiries into identity and loyalty rather than merely a simple mystery-box resolution.
