Marvel Introduces Cyclops’ New Codename in Midnight X-Men
Scott Summers, famously known as Cyclops for over 60 years, is set for a significant transformation. Since his debut in 1963, the X-Men leader has predominantly retained his original codename, even as Marvel has occasionally explored other identities.
However, a new chapter is unfolding as Marvel plunges Cyclops into a darker narrative with the upcoming ‘Midnight: X-Men’ series. This horror-themed storyline will introduce vampires, undead mutants, and a version of the X-Men that diverges sharply from what fans are accustomed to. In this eerie new realm, Scott Summers will adopt a new title: Cyclops: Vampire Hunter.
This fresh moniker will feature prominently in ‘Midnight: X-Men’, crafted by writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Matteo Della Fonte. The series unfolds in a new continuity where supernatural threats loom larger than ever.
The central conflict revolves around the clash between vampires and mutants. Yet, the dynamics are more complex than a simple battle between the two factions. Marvel has introduced three key groups: humans and regular mutants, vampires, and a faction known as the Empyres. The Empyres consist of mutants who have turned undead but do not necessarily align with the typical vampire hierarchy.
Several familiar X-Men characters appear to have joined the Empyres, with artwork hinting that Storm, Iceman, and Gambit are among them. This development places Cyclops in a precarious situation.
Instead of merely defending mutantkind against human threats, Scott will now be on a quest to hunt vampires while contending with formidable undead mutants. So far, Nightcrawler has been confirmed as one of his allies.

Marvel’s description of the series hints at the perilous stakes involved: “THE X-MAN COMETH! The peace between the unturned mutants and the empyres is a fragile one. No group dares to move against the other in fear of sparking an all-out war. Only one man is brave enough to openly stand against the empyres and put down as many of them as he can. This is the story of Cyclops: Vampire Hunter.”
In this new iteration, Scott will sport a drastically different appearance. Artwork reveals him with a shaved head and a beard, presenting a more rugged survivor image compared to the traditional clean-cut X-Men leader.
An intriguing question arises regarding how Cyclops’ powers will function against vampires.
In the established Marvel universe, Scott’s optic blasts derive from energy he absorbs from his surroundings, including solar energy and radiation. This could potentially provide him an edge against vampires if his abilities adapt in the Midnight universe.
One theory suggests that his optic blasts might mimic sunlight, making them particularly lethal to vampires. However, this has yet to be confirmed by Marvel.
For now, the most evident change is that Cyclops is no longer merely the X-Men’s renowned field leader. In this new horror universe, Scott Summers is embracing the role of a vampire hunter.
‘Midnight: X-Men’ #2 is set to hit shelves on November 18 from Marvel Comics.
