Venom Co-Creator Names Alan Ritchson as the Ideal Live-Action Eddie Brock
Fan casting discussions have become a beloved tradition in the comic book community, with various actors frequently suggested for iconic roles. However, when the casting comes from the character’s co-creator, it certainly adds more significance to the conversation.
This is the case with Eddie Brock, who finds himself in a state of uncertainty following Tom Hardy’s departure from the role after ‘Venom: The Last Dance.’ With Sony’s Spider-Man universe in a state of flux and no clear direction for the symbiotic antihero, fans are left to ponder who might take on the role next.
The speculation gained traction when ‘Venom’ co-creator David Michelinie shared his thoughts on potential casting. In a post on X, content creator TheDoctorX11 revealed that he asked Michelinie directly about which actor would be a faithful live-action Eddie Brock, suggesting ‘Reacher’ star Alan Ritchson.
Michelinie was quite clear about his stance, stating, “I once posted pics of Ritchson—shirtless and one of him yelling—and said he’d make the perfect Eddie/Venom. So we’re on the same page,” as shared by TheDoctorX11 on X.
According to Michelinie, this endorsement was not a spontaneous thought. He noted that he had previously shared images of Ritchson, specifically highlighting a shirtless photo and one of the actor mid-yell, showcasing Ritchson’s physicality and intensity, which are essential for embodying the character. This specific reasoning indicates that Michelinie has been considering this casting idea for quite some time.
Eddie Brock has a rich history on screen, with Topher Grace first portraying the character in Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man 3’ before Hardy took over for Sony’s standalone ‘Venom’ trilogy. With the future of that franchise uncertain and no official plans for a recast, fans are left to speculate about who could next take on the role of the symbiote-bonded antihero.
Ritchson’s name has also been a popular choice in superhero casting discussions, with fans frequently suggesting him for DC’s Batman. He has expressed interest in joining James Gunn’s DC Universe, and with both fans and a comic book creator backing him for significant roles, the conversation around him continues to grow.
Whether Michelinie’s endorsement will influence Sony or Marvel Studios remains uncertain, as comic creators typically do not have a say in casting decisions for films based on their characters. However, it is a significant vote of confidence from someone who deeply understands Eddie Brock’s comic book origins.
Currently, Venom’s future in live-action remains uncertain, with Sony reportedly focusing on its Spider-Man-centric projects rather than reviving the character anytime soon. Given the buzz surrounding fan casting, it’s likely that Ritchson’s name will continue to surface whenever discussions about Eddie Brock’s next chapter arise.
