Rebecca Romijn’s portrayal of Mystique has been iconic in the comic book movie landscape since 2000, when she dedicated up to nine hours daily to transform into the blue-skinned mutant with body paint and prosthetics.

In her early appearances, Romijn had minimal dialogue, relying on her physicality and presence to make Mystique a standout character in Fox’s original X-Men trilogy. This performance laid the groundwork for the character long before Jennifer Lawrence took on the role.

Her anticipated return to the character she first embodied is a significant moment, especially with Marvel confirming her reunion with co-stars like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and James Marsden in ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Fans have speculated for months on how Marvel might reinterpret these Fox-era characters now that they share the same universe as the Avengers.

This week, Marvel unveiled new images showcasing a fresh look for Romijn’s Mystique, highlighting a design that aligns more closely with the comics compared to her original Fox appearance. The new costume features a striking white and blue color scheme with a prominent diamond emblem on the chest, marking a notable shift from her previous outfits.

In contrast to the Fox films, where Mystique’s blue skin was largely exposed, this new suit covers her neck and chest, indicating Marvel’s intention for a more modest and family-friendly portrayal. The redesign requires approximately seven hours of practical makeup each day for Romijn, a reduction from the nine-hour process she faced during the original X-Men trilogy, as much of her body is now concealed by the costume.

Romijn described her experience filming ‘Doomsday’ as surreal and incredibly enjoyable, especially reuniting with her original X-Men castmates while also collaborating with the wider MCU ensemble. She has been balancing this production with her work on ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,’ making for an eventful summer filled with travel between sets.

Mystique is not the only character from the Fox era receiving a redesign for this crossover. Leaked crew merchandise has also revealed comic-accurate updates for Magneto, Nightcrawler, Namor, and Doctor Doom, with Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler swapping his old leather jacket for a tactical red and black suit featuring his signature V emblem. Reports from CinemaCon indicated that footage showcased a chaotic battle between Mystique and Yelena Belova, where Mystique’s shapeshifting abilities allowed for two versions of Florence Pugh’s character to appear on screen simultaneously.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ reunites James Marsden as Cyclops, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Channing Tatum as Gambit, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, and Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler alongside Romijn’s Mystique, all coming together decades after their original Fox films. The film is set to hit theaters on December 18, and with this new look confirmed, fans can finally see how Marvel is evolving these legacy characters beyond their Fox origins.
