Hollywood continues to be captivated by fast cars and family dynasties, and the latest film in this trend is set to showcase two of the industry’s most esteemed actors. Following a surge of automotive biopics that highlight the rise of Italy’s iconic car brands, one of the most star-studded entries is ready to hit the screen.

This film is ‘Maserati: The Brothers,’ and its first official trailer has just been released by The Hollywood Reporter. The period drama chronicles the Maserati family’s journey toward automotive greatness, filmed on location in Modena, Italy’s automotive heart, and at Rome’s historic Cinecittà Studios.

The narrative focuses on the Maserati brothers—Alfieri, Bindo, and Carlo—portrayed by Michele Morrone, Salvatore Esposito, and Lorenzo De Moor, respectively, as they pursue the Indianapolis 500, a race the real Maserati brand famously won in 1939 and 1940. The film features a star-studded cast, including Al Pacino as businessman Vincenzo Vaccaro, an early supporter of the Maserati family, and Anthony Hopkins as another key backer of the brothers’ aspirations.

Jessica Alba and Andy Garcia also join the impressive cast, showcasing the level of talent assembled for this project. Pacino and Hopkins together hold three Best Actor Oscars, while director Robert Moresco has an Academy Award for co-writing ‘Crash’ in 2005. Garcia has received an Oscar nomination during his career, adding to the film’s prestigious ensemble both in front of and behind the camera.

Moresco directs from a screenplay by Amanda Moresco and Stefano Torrisi, continuing their collaboration focused on this niche of Italian automotive history. ‘Maserati: The Brothers’ is produced by The Andrea Iervolino Company, marking the studio’s third biopic centered on a legendary Italian car brand.

This track record includes the 2022 film ‘Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend,’ featuring Frank Grillo as Ferruccio Lamborghini, giving Iervolino’s team direct experience in crafting this type of family-empire storytelling for theatrical release. A fourth entry in this unofficial series is already in development, focusing on the life of Ettore Bugatti.

The broader genre has proven commercially successful in recent years, particularly with Michael Mann’s 2024 film ‘Ferrari,’ starring Adam Driver as Enzo Ferrari, which solidified audience interest in these prestige-driven, motorsport-related dramas. With ‘F1’ also achieving box office success recently, studios clearly recognize the ongoing demand for stories set in the realm of high-performance racing, even when the emphasis is more on boardroom drama than track-side action.

Whether ‘Maserati: The Brothers’ can establish its own identity alongside ‘Ferrari’ and ‘Lamborghini’ remains to be seen, but the cast certainly provides a strong argument for its uniqueness. With production completed in two of Italy’s most renowned filmmaking locations and a script centered on one of motorsport’s most celebrated underdog victories, the film is positioning itself as a serious contender for awards season within the genre.
